How to Make Twine from Fabric Scraps

Anyone who sews knows that you end up with a lot of stash fabric. Oftentimes, it’s too small to do anything with, but you save it anyway. Throwing out fabric just seems so wasteful. If you’re like me you store it in bins and think to yourself, “I’ll do something with it someday”. I’ve found the perfect solution to your scrap fabric hoarding! This video tutorial will show you How to Make Twine from Fabric Scraps. This is really easy to do and the only tool you need is your hands. It’s also pretty addictive to make and the perfect thing to do while binge-watching Netflix. Put your scraps to good use!

How to Make Twine from Fabric Scraps

Supplies:
Cotton fabric strips (I don’t recommend using stretch fabric)
Scissors

This basic method is easy to get the hang of and it will make a dent in any abundant stash of fabric remnants!  This fun project creates lovely twine rope that can be used for a variety of craft projects. See how I sewed this twine into pretty fabric bowls.

Tear or cut (approximately) 1 1/2 inch wide long strips of fabric (strips of different length). You will need lots of scrap fabric strips, so I like to cut them all before I start twisting. Take 2 strands and make a knot at the end. Loop them over something to hold. I used a nail and scrap wood, but you can use anything. Separate the strands and twist the right one away from you 2 times. Pass it over the left strand (the second strip), and repeat.

When you reach the end of the fabric strip, it’s time to add a new piece. This is called a join. Stagger your new strip (join) so they are not right next to each other. Staggering the joins will result in a stronger twine.
