How to Make a Macrame Yoga Mat Strap
Supplies needed:
3mm Macrame cord (I used 3 different colors)
Wooden rings
This mat strap is made using the Alternating Square Knot. The Alternating Square Knot is created by working with cords from neighboring square knots. If you are new to macrame and unfamiliar with the Square Knot, please read my post- How to Make 3 Easy Macrame Knots.
How to Tie the Alternating Square Knot
The Alternating Square Knot creates a diamond pattern and can be used to form wide panels.
Starting with eight cords, tie rows of square knots, alternating the cords you use with each row. Tie one square knot with the inner four cords, then tie two knots using the four cords on either side.
Cut 4 lengths of cord that measure 28 feet long each.
With the center 4 cords, make a square knot.
Make another square knot using the 4 cords on the right side.
Make another square knot using the 4 cords on the left side.
Make another square knot with the center 4 cords. Repeat these 3 series of knots (middle, right, left) for pattern.
Work until the cord measures 57 inches long (measured from the bottom of the ring).
Take the end of the macrame cord and insert it through the first wooden ring to form a loop. Insert the second ring through the end of the macrame cord.
How to Tie a Macrame Wrap Knot
Cut a new piece of cord that measures roughly 16 inches. Lay it over the cords you want to wrap and make a “U” shape. Remember- you want to catch both the loose cords and the knotted ones underneath in this wrap.
Pull the right side of the cord underneath the work.
Wrap the working cord firmly around the bundle of yarn continuously until you have reached your desired length, ensuring that each wrap is directly underneath the previous one.
Pass the end of the working cord through it’s remaining loop at the bottom.
Pull up the left end of the (U-shaped) working cord to slide the loop inside the wrapped area until it is half way through. Cut off the end close to the knot.
