Beanie Baby Costume DIY
Open the Beanie Baby tag image in Photoshop or your preferred photo-editing program. Resize the image so that it measures approximately 4 inches wide, making sure to keep the original proportions so the heart shape doesn’t become stretched or distorted.
Once the image is resized, print it out on regular white printer paper. For the best results, choose a high-quality print setting so the red color and lettering look crisp and vibrant. Before moving on to the next step, double-check that the printed tag is the size you want for the costume.
If you’re making this costume for an older child or adult, you can also print the tag slightly larger. The oversized heart tag is what makes this DIY Beanie Baby costume instantly recognizable, so don’t worry about making it a little bigger for extra impact.
Carefully cut out the heart-shaped Beanie Baby tag using a pair of scissors. Take your time cutting around the curved edges so the finished heart has a clean, smooth shape.
For a sturdier costume tag, you can glue the printed heart onto a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard before cutting it out. This will help the tag hold its shape and keep it from bending or tearing while the costume is being worn.
Once the heart is completely cut out, set it aside while you prepare the next step of the DIY Beanie Baby costume.
Next, glue the heart-shaped Beanie Baby tag onto a piece of metallic gold cardstock. Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the back of the printed heart, making sure to cover the edges so they stay securely in place.
Press the heart firmly onto the cardstock and smooth it down to remove any wrinkles or air bubbles. Allow the glue to dry completely before cutting. The metallic gold cardstock creates a sturdy backing for the tag while adding a fun, finished look to this DIY Beanie Baby costume.
Once the glue is completely dry, carefully cut around the heart again, this time leaving a small border of metallic gold cardstock visible around the entire edge.
Try to keep the width of the gold border even as you cut around the curves of the heart. The metallic edging gives the homemade Beanie Baby tag a sturdier, more polished appearance and helps the bright red heart stand out.
Take your time around the top curves and point of the heart for the cleanest finish. Once cut out, your oversized DIY Beanie Baby tag is almost ready to attach to the costume.
Next, use the gold-trimmed heart as a template to create the back of the Beanie Baby tag. Place the heart on top of the red cardstock and carefully trace around the outside edge.
Before cutting, add a small rectangular tab to one side of the heart. This tab will be used to connect the front and back pieces of the tag, so be sure to leave it attached to the heart as you cut.
Carefully cut around the traced heart and tab. When finished, you should have a red cardstock heart that closely matches the size and shape of the gold-trimmed front piece, with the small tab extending from the side.
Fold the small cardstock tab over to create a hinge for the Beanie Baby tag. Apply a small amount of glue to the folded tab, making sure not to spread the glue onto the main part of the heart.
Carefully position the gold-trimmed heart on top, lining up the edges of the two heart shapes as evenly as possible. Press firmly on the tab for a few seconds to help the glue adhere, then allow it to dry completely.

Next, make a small hole near the top of the finished Beanie Baby tag. I used a nail to carefully create the hole, but you can also use a small hole punch or another suitable craft tool.
Thread a needle with a length of coordinating thread and pass it through the hole in the tag. Carefully sew the tag onto the ear of the sherpa bunting, using a few secure stitches to hold it in place. Make sure the tag is attached firmly but can still hang naturally from the ear.
Once Halloween is over, simply snip the stitches and remove the tag so the cozy bunting can be worn throughout the fall and winter.
Finally, put the costume on your little one and behold…the cutest little Beanie Baby ever! This easy DIY Halloween costume comes together quickly, feels warm and comfortable, and has just the right amount of ’90s nostalgia.
