Holding two strands of yarn together is an easy way to completely change the look and feel of a knitting project. For this hat, two different yarns are treated as though they were a single strand throughout the pattern. The combination creates subtle variations in color and texture, giving the finished beanie its layered tweed appearance.
You can experiment with different yarn combinations to make the hat your own. Choose two similar shades for a subtle, sophisticated effect or pair contrasting colors for a more noticeable marled look. It’s also a fun way to combine yarns already in your stash and create a color combination that’s completely unique.

How to Seam a Flat Knit Hat
Once you’ve finished knitting and closed the top of the hat, the final step is sewing the side seam. A neat seam helps give your flat knit hat a smooth, finished look and makes it difficult to tell that the hat was worked on straight needles.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming.
Thread the yarn tail through a large tapestry needle.
Fold the hat in half with the right sides facing out and line up the side edges.
Starting at the top of the hat, use mattress stitch to join the two edges together.
Work back and forth between the edge stitches, keeping the stitches even as you seam.
Gently pull the yarn every few stitches to bring the edges together.
Avoid pulling too tightly, which can cause the seam to pucker.
Continue down to the bottom edge of the hat.
Weave in the remaining yarn securely on the inside.
Tip: Mattress stitch creates a nearly invisible vertical seam and works especially well for ribbed and textured flat knit hats.

Frequently Asked Questions about Easy Layered Tweed Hat Knitting Pattern
Is this hat knitting pattern beginner-friendly?
Yes! This is a great project for beginners who are comfortable with basic knit and purl stitches. The hat is worked flat on straight knitting needles, so you don’t need to know how to use circular needles or double-pointed needles. The simple ribbing creates plenty of stretch and gives the finished hat a classic, cozy look.
Why are two strands of yarn held together?
This pattern uses Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick and Red Heart Super Soft held together at the same time. Combining the two yarns creates an extra-thick, warm fabric while also adding color and texture. Simply hold one strand from each skein together and knit with them as though they were a single strand of yarn.
Can I substitute different yarn?
Yes, but keep in mind that changing the yarn can affect the size and fit of the finished hat. If you substitute yarn, choose options that create a similar thickness when held together and always check your gauge before beginning.
How is the hat finished?
After completing the crown decreases, the remaining stitches are gathered tightly to close the top. The side edges are then joined using mattress stitch. This creates a neat seam and gives the finished project the appearance of a hat knit in the round.
Can I make the hat longer?
Absolutely. For a slouchier fit or a larger folded brim, simply work additional rows of K2, P2 rib before beginning the crown decreases.
How long does this hat take to knit?
Because the pattern uses two strands of thick yarn held together, it works up quickly. The simple ribbing and straightforward construction make this a satisfying project for an afternoon or evening of knitting.
