No-Sew Ghost Costume- comfortable, cute, and totally easy to make!
The ghost costume has gotten a bit of a bad rap. It’s generally the first thing people think of when they hear “last-minute, easy Halloween costume”. Cut some eye holes in a white sheet and Boom!, you’re finished. Effective, but kind of lame.
This friendly little ghost is here to show you that with a little more time and effort, you can make an awesome Halloween costume using scissors and a few other supplies!
Instead of a sheet over the head, this costume consists of a cute poncho. It creates the same effect as the sheet, except it’s much more comfortable. It slips over the child’s head and it is open on the sides. This is a great costume for kids to wear to school or for trick or treating!

Supplies needed for No-Sew Ghost Costume:
White fleece 30 x 50 inches (this will fit a small child. For reference, Indigo is 3 1/2 years old). This pattern can easily accommodate larger sizes but using more yardage of fleece.
Fleece is a great fabric to use because it’s warm and it also doesn’t fray.
Black adhesive felt– you can also use regular black felt and fabric glue.

How to Make a No-Sew Ghost Costume
Cut the bottom 10 inches off the fabric and put it aside. This will be used to make the hat later on.
Fold the fabric over and then Fold the fabric in half and measure to find the exact middle of the fold line. Mark this spot with a pin. Measure 4 inches across on either side of the pin and mark. Cut a small semi-circle and try on the child to make sure it fits over the head. Remember- it’s best to start small and gradually increase the neck hole.
Cut the edges of the poncho on all sides into strips that measure an inch wide and 5 inches high.
Knot all the strips near the base of the fabric.
Print out your ghost face template (you may need to re-size it using photo editing software). Cut out the eyes and mouth and tape it to the felt. Cut the face out and stick to the poncho. The adhesive on the felt was surprisingly strong and it stayed in place, but if you wanted, you could also add some fabric glue.
Fold the piece of fleece over. Take a child’s hat place it on top as a pattern. Fleece doesn’t have the stretch of a knit hat, so make sure you accommodate for this difference by adding extra inches on the sides. I also added an extra inch or so to the top of the hat and to the brim. I wanted it to stand up taller than a knit hat and I also wanted to make a folded under brim.
The hat can either be assembled using a sewing machine (which I did) or fabric glue. Place the 2 sides of the hat together and either sew or glue the seams. If you chose to sew, you can also fold the brim under and stitch in place.

Thank you for posting this! A friend sent me this link, and I made my toddler’s ghost costume for Halloween from your design. Despite your warning about starting small with the neck hole, I somehow misread the measurements and cut it too big. I pinned it for today and will sew it smaller by Halloween. I added iron-on letters (“BOO”) on the hat which was a cute touch. This was simple, inexpensive, and looks great! Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the tutorial! I followed your instructions and loved the result. The knotted fringe made it move so cute. My child is 2.5 years old so we went with 26” x 26” for the poncho. Perfect fit. Definitely recommend taking measurements. Found all items on Amazon. Thanks again!!
