Why You’ll Love This Easy Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

If you love knitting cozy winter accessories but prefer working with straight needles, this flat knit ear flap hat is a great addition to your project list! Unlike traditional hats that are worked in the round, this design is knit back and forth in rows and then seamed together. The chunky texture and oversized pom poms make it look impressive without requiring complicated knitting techniques.

Here’s why this pattern is worth trying:

Knit flat on straight needles: No circular or double-pointed needles required!
Cozy ear flap design: The long ear flaps help keep your ears warm during cold winter weather.
Three fluffy pom poms: One on top and two at the ends of the ear flaps create a playful, stylish finish.
Chunky knit texture: Thick, cozy stitches give this hat a beautiful handmade look.
Beginner-friendly construction: A great project for knitters who are comfortable with basic stitches and ready to try something new.
Perfect for handmade gifts: This cozy hat makes a thoughtful Christmas present or winter birthday gift.

The best part is that you can customize the finished hat with your favorite yarn colors. Choose a classic neutral for a timeless winter accessory or a bright, cheerful shade for a fun pop of color!

A Cozy Winter Hat You Can Knit on Straight Needles

There’s something especially satisfying about making your own winter accessories, and this easy ear flap hat knitting pattern is a wonderful way to add a little personality to your cold-weather wardrobe. The combination of a warm, textured hat and extra-long ear flaps makes this design perfect for winter walks, outdoor adventures, and snowy afternoons.

Because this hat is knit flat, you can enjoy the simplicity of working on straight knitting needles without worrying about managing stitches in the round. Once the knitting is complete, the pieces are assembled and finished with fluffy pom poms for a polished, handmade look.

This cozy hat also makes a fantastic gift for anyone who loves unique winter accessories. Pair it with a handmade scarf or mittens for a matching winter set, or knit several in different colors for friends and family. It’s a fun, practical project you’ll enjoy making all winter long!

Rows 1–26: *K2, P2; repeat from * across the row.

Shape the Crown

Row 27 (Decrease Row): *K2, P2, K2, P2tog; repeat from * across the row. (42 stitches)

Row 28: *K2, P2, K2, P1; repeat from * across the row. (42 stitches)

Row 29 (Decrease Row): *K2, P2tog, K2, P1; repeat from * across the row. (36 stitches)

Row 31 (Decrease Row): *K2tog, P1, K2tog, P1; repeat from * across the row. (24 stitches)

Finishing the Hat

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail approximately 12 inches long.

Thread the yarn tail through a yarn needle. Slip the remaining 24 stitches off the knitting needle, threading the yarn through each stitch.

Pull tightly to gather the stitches and close the top of the hat.

Using the remaining yarn tail, sew the back seam together. Weave in any loose ends.

For the Ear Flaps (Make 2)

Cast on 12 stitches.

Rows 1 onward: *K2, P2; repeat from * across the row until the piece measures approximately 9 inches from the cast-on edge.

Shape the Ear Flap

Continue decreasing at the beginning of each row as follows:

Row 1: K2tog, work in the established rib pattern to the end of the row. (11 stitches)

Row 2: P2tog, work in the established rib pattern to the end of the row. (10 stitches)

Repeat Rows 1 and 2, decreasing 1 stitch on every row, until only 2 stitches remain.

Bind off the remaining 2 stitches.

Repeat to make the second ear flap.

Finishing

Step 1: Fold up the bottom edge of the hat to create a cuff.

Step 2: Position the ear flaps evenly on opposite sides of the hat. Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the cast-on edges of the ear flaps securely to the inside of the hat.

Step 3: Make 3 large pom poms using the same yarn.

Step 4: Attach one pom pom to the top of the hat and one to the end of each ear flap.

Step 5: Weave in all loose ends and trim the pom poms into rounded shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Easy Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

Is this ear flap hat knitting pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This easy ear flap hat knitting pattern is a great project for adventurous beginners who are comfortable with basic knit and purl stitches. The hat is worked flat on straight knitting needles, so there’s no need to use circular needles or double-pointed needles. You’ll also practice simple decreases and seaming.

What yarn is best for this knitted ear flap hat?

I used Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in Spearmint, a soft, super bulky weight yarn. Super bulky yarn creates a thick, warm hat and works up quickly. You can substitute another category 6 super bulky yarn, but be sure to check your gauge, as different yarns can affect the finished size.

Can I knit this hat without the pom poms?

Absolutely! The three oversized pom poms give this hat its playful look, but they’re completely optional. For a simpler style, leave them off or add just one pom pom to the top of the hat.

Do I need circular knitting needles?

No! This entire hat is knit flat using US 13 straight knitting needles. Once the knitting is complete, the back seam is sewn together to create the finished hat.

Can I make the ear flaps shorter?

Yes! The ear flaps measure approximately 9 inches before shaping, but you can adjust their length to suit your preference. Simply work fewer rows of ribbing before beginning the decreases.
