Beginner-Friendly Baby Vest Knit Flat

If you’re looking for an approachable baby knitting project, this easy baby pullover vest knitting pattern is a great place to start. If you’ve been wanting to move beyond scarves and hats and try knitting your first garment, a small baby vest is an easy way to get started.

A Quick and Cozy Baby Knitting Project

One of my favorite things about knitting baby clothes is that you can create a complete garment without committing to a large, time-consuming project. This Easy Baby Pullover Vest Knitting Pattern combines simple construction with a classic style that can be worn again and again. Because it’s sleeveless, it’s also a versatile layering piece that won’t restrict baby’s arms or feel overly bulky under a jacket.
For the best results, choose a soft, comfortable yarn that’s suitable for baby clothing and easy to care for. This pattern would look beautiful in traditional baby shades, warm autumn neutrals, or modern muted colors. The simple design also lets the texture of the knitted fabric stand out.

Whether you’re knitting for your own little one or looking for a thoughtful handmade present, this baby pullover vest is a satisfying project that’s both cute and useful.

Pattern instructions:

Back

With smaller needles, cast on 50 (56, 60, 70) sts.
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for ¾ inch, ending with a wrong-side row.

Change to larger needles.
Work in Stockinette Stitch until the piece measures 5 (5½, 6, 6½) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong-side row.

Shape Armholes

At each armhole edge, bind off 2 sts 3 (4, 4, 5) times. 38 (40, 44, 50) sts remain.

Continue working even in Stockinette Stitch until the armhole measures 4½ (5, 5½, 6) inches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Shape Back Neck

Next Row (RS): Knit 11 (11, 12, 14) sts. Place the center 16 (18, 20, 22) sts on a stitch holder for the back neck. Join a second ball of yarn and knit the remaining 11 (11, 12, 14) sts.

You will now work both shoulders at the same time using separate balls of yarn.
At each neck edge, decrease 1 st once. 10 (10, 11, 13) sts remain for each shoulder.

Continue working even until the armhole measures 5 (5½, 6, 6½) inches.

Bind off the remaining shoulder stitches.

Front

With smaller needles, cast on 50 (56, 60, 70) sts.

Work in K1, P1 ribbing for ¾ inch, ending with a wrong-side row.

Change to larger needles.

Work in Stockinette Stitch until the piece measures 2 rows less than the Back before the armhole shaping begins, ending with a wrong-side row.

Divide for V-Neck

Next Row (RS): Knit 24 (27, 29, 34) sts. Place the center 2 sts on a stitch holder for the front neck. Join a second ball of yarn and knit to the end of the row. You now have 24 (27, 29, 34) sts on each side.

Continue working both sides at the same time using a separate ball of yarn for each side.

Shape Armholes and V-Neck

The armhole and V-neck shaping are worked at the same time.

Armholes: At each outside armhole edge, bind off 2 sts 3 (4, 4, 5) times. This removes a total of 6 (8, 8, 10) sts from each side.

At the same time, shape the V-neck: At each neck edge, decrease 1 st every other row 3 (3, 4, 4) times.

Then decrease 1 st at each neck edge every 4th row 5 (6, 6, 7) times.

When all armhole and neck shaping is complete, you will have 10 (10, 11, 13) sts remaining for each shoulder.

Continue working even until the armhole measures the same as the Back to the shoulder: 5 (5½, 6, 6½) inches.

Bind off the remaining shoulder stitches.

Easy Baby Pullover Vest Knitting Pattern FAQ

Is this baby vest knitting pattern good for beginners?

Yes! This Easy Baby Pullover Vest Knitting Pattern is beginner-friendly and uses straightforward construction. Since the vest is knit flat, you don’t need to be comfortable working with circular or double-pointed needles.

Is the baby vest knit flat or in the round?

The vest is worked flat in separate pieces and then seamed together. This makes it a great choice for knitters who prefer using straight needles.

What knitting skills do I need?

You should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques such as casting on, knitting, purling, ribbing, binding off, and simple shaping. If you’ve already completed a few basic knitting projects, this vest is a nice next step.

Why are knitted baby vests a good project?

Baby vests are quick to knit and practical because they add warmth without the bulk of sleeves. They’re also easy to layer over a bodysuit, shirt, or lightweight sweater during fall and winter.

Can I substitute a different yarn?

Yes, but choose a yarn that produces the same gauge as the pattern. Matching gauge is especially important when knitting baby clothing because even a small difference can noticeably change the finished size.

Is this a good handmade baby gift?

Absolutely. A knitted pullover vest makes a thoughtful baby shower or new-baby gift. It’s also a relatively quick project compared with a full sweater.
