How to Sew a Toddler Tank Top using a t-shirt as a pattern

One of my favorite things to sew for Indigo is tank tops. I’ve made so many of these in different prints/colors.They’re cool, comfortable and a great way to use up smaller pieces of fabric. They’re also really fast and easy to sew! The best part? You don’t even need a store bought pattern! I’m going to show you How to Sew a Kids Tank Top using one their t-shirts a pattern. This can be done with any kind of stretch jersey. I find the heavier jersey much easier to work with than the tissue thin kind.

I created this custom printed fabric at Contrado. I love the way it turned out! I uploaded a beach pic and they printed it on the fabric. They have a huge selection of fabrics (including several jerseys) that they print on. The print quality really is fantastic!

How to Sew a Kids Tank Top:

Take the t-shirt and turn it inside out. Tuck in the sleeves and fold it over. Fold your fabric over and place the folded t-shirt on the edge.

Measure 1/2 inch past the t-shirt as a seam allowance (except around the collar). Cut the pattern piece out.

Using the piece you just cut as a pattern, cut out a second piece.

Sew the tank pieces together at the sides and shoulders.

The next step is to make the binding around the arm holes and the collar. Measure the circumference around the arm holes and the collar. Cut the lengths out of fabric, making them 1 1/2 inches high. Fold over lengthwise and sew a seam.
