Easy Stockinette Chevron Stitch Knitting Pattern (Beginner-Friendly Zigzag Stitch Tutorial)
Learn how to knit the Easy Stockinette Chevron Stitch Knitting Pattern with this beginner-friendly tutorial. Create beautiful zigzag textures using simple increases and decreases on straight needles.

If you’re looking for a knitting stitch that adds beautiful texture and visual interest without being difficult to learn, the Stockinette Chevron Stitch is a perfect choice. This classic zigzag pattern creates eye-catching peaks and valleys that look much more complicated than they actually are.
The Stockinette Chevron Stitch combines simple increases and decreases to form a repeating wave pattern across your knitting. While the finished fabric has a polished, professional appearance, the stitch pattern only requires a few basic techniques, making it a great option for adventurous beginners and experienced knitters alike.
Whether you’re knitting scarves, blankets, dishcloths, home décor projects, or sweaters, this versatile stitch pattern can add movement and texture to almost any project.
Why You’ll Love the Stockinette Chevron Stitch
There are countless knitting stitch patterns available, but chevron designs remain one of the most popular for good reason.
The zigzag effect creates natural movement across the fabric while still maintaining the smooth look of stockinette stitch. Because the pattern is formed with strategically placed increases and decreases, you get dramatic results without complicated cables or lace techniques.
This stitch is also:
Beginner-friendly
Easy to memorize
Great for practicing shaping techniques
Suitable for many yarn weights
Beautiful in both solid and variegated yarns
Perfect for blankets, scarves, and accessories
Once you complete a few pattern repeats, you’ll likely find yourself knitting it from memory.
What Creates the Chevron Pattern?
The magic of the Stockinette Chevron Stitch comes from balancing increases and decreases across the row.
The increases create the peaks of the chevrons while the decreases create the valleys. Because these shaping stitches line up vertically from row to row, the fabric develops its signature zigzag appearance.
The stitch pattern uses:
Knit Front and Back (KFB) increases
Slip 1 Knit 1 Pass Slip Stitch Over (SKP or PSSO) decreases
Knit Two Together (K2TOG) decreases
Simple knit and purl stitches
These are all foundational techniques that many knitters learn early in their knitting journey.

How to Knit the Stockinette Chevron Stitch
Materials
- Yarn in any weight from DK to Bulky with corresponding size single point needles.
Instructions
Cast on a multiple of 14 and add two.
Row 1 (ws): Pirl all sts
Row 2 (rs): K, kfb, *k4, S1 K1 psso, k2tog, k4, kfb twice. Rep from * to last two sts. Kfb then k last st.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern.
Understanding the Stitch Pattern
When you first look at the pattern instructions, it may seem like a lot is happening. However, the repeat is actually quite simple.
Each chevron section contains:
Two increases to create the peak
Two decreases to create the valley
Stockinette sections between them
Because the number of increases equals the number of decreases, your stitch count remains consistent throughout the project. This balance is what allows the zigzag pattern to develop while keeping the fabric stable.
Best Yarn Choices for Chevron Stitch
One of the reasons knitters love this pattern is its versatility.
Solid Colors
Solid yarns highlight the texture and shape of the chevrons beautifully. The peaks and valleys become the focal point of the project.
Tonal Yarn
Subtle tonal yarns add depth while still allowing the stitch pattern to remain visible.
Self-Striping Yarn
Chevron stitches and self-striping yarn are a fantastic combination. The color changes naturally emphasize the zigzag effect and create stunning visual results.
Variegated Yarn
Variegated yarn can create a more playful appearance while still showcasing the stitch pattern.

Once you’re comfortable with the stitch pattern, it can be incorporated into garment designs for unique texture and shaping.

Common Beginner Mistakes
Losing Track of Increases and Decreases
The most common mistake is accidentally skipping an increase or decrease.
Using stitch markers between repeats can help keep you organized.
Miscounting Stitches
Count your stitches regularly, especially when learning the pattern.
Since the increases and decreases balance each other, your stitch count should remain unchanged.
Tight Decreases
Many knitters work decreases more tightly than regular knit stitches.
Try relaxing your tension slightly when working S1 K1 PSSO and K2TOG.
Does Chevron Stitch Curl?
Like most stockinette-based stitch patterns, Chevron Stitch can curl along the edges because stockinette fabric naturally curls. Adding a border in garter stitch or seed stitch can help reduce curling.
For scarves and blankets, many knitters add several border stitches on each side for a flatter finished project.
