A Beginner-Friendly Baby Knitting Project
Garter stitch is one of the easiest knitting stitches to learn, making this pattern ideal for beginner knitters. Since every row is knit, you can relax and enjoy the process without worrying about complicated stitch patterns.
The cardigan is knit flat in pieces and seamed together, while the hat is also knit flat before sewing the seam. This makes the project especially approachable if you prefer knitting on straight needles instead of circulars or double-pointed needles.
The finished set has a cozy, squishy texture that photographs beautifully and feels incredibly soft against baby’s skin.

Tips for Knitting This Baby Set
Choose a Soft Yarn
Babies have sensitive skin, so soft acrylic, cotton blends, or washable wool blends work best for this project.
Check Your Gauge
Taking a few minutes to knit a gauge swatch can help ensure the cardigan and hat fit properly.
Use Stitch Markers
Even simple patterns become easier when you use stitch markers to track shaping sections.
Block Before Seaming
Light blocking helps smooth out edges and makes finishing easier.
Don’t Stress About Perfection
Garter stitch is forgiving, which makes it ideal for beginners. Small imperfections often disappear into the texture.
