A Quick Tip for a Beautiful Finish

Note: Because this scarf is knit in stockinette stitch, the edges will naturally curl. Don’t worry—this is completely normal and an easy fix!

After finishing my scarf, I steam blocked it, which helped the fabric relax, lay much flatter, and gave it a polished, professional look. I also steam blocked the pockets before sewing them onto the scarf, making them easier to align and stitch neatly.

If you’re using acrylic yarn, steam blocking can make a dramatic difference in the finished appearance. For step-by-step instructions and helpful tips, check out my guide on how to steam block acrylic knitting projects before assembling your scarf.

Pattern Note: To avoid weaving in extra ends, carry the unused color of yarn up the side of the scarf as you work the stripes. Simply twist the working yarn around the unused yarn at each color change to secure it neatly along the edge. Because the carried yarn will be hidden, it won’t be visible in the finished scarf, leaving the project looking clean and polished while saving you time during finishing.

    Pattern instructions:
Pattern: Stockinette stitch- 2 rows black, then 2 rows white

    For the scarf:
With the black yarn, cast on 22 sts.
Work 2 rows in Stockinette Stitch and then switch to the white yarn.
Work in pattern until scarf measures 70 inches from the beginning ending with a black row. Bind off.

    For the pockets (make 2)
With the black yarn, cast on 16 sts.
Work in pattern for 22 rows. Bind off.

    For the fringe
To add fringe, cut 4 strands of yarn approximately 20 inches long (or your desired finished length, allowing for folding). Fold two strands in half to form a loop. Using a crochet hook, insert the hook through the edge of the scarf, pull the loop through, then pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten gently to secure. Repeat evenly across both ends of the scarf until you’ve added your desired amount of fringe. Once finished, trim the fringe so all the strands are even.

    Finishing
Sew the pockets 2 1/2 inches above the cast on and bind off edges.

Frequently Asked Questions about Easy Stripe Pocket Scarf Knitting Pattern

Is this pocket scarf knitting pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This is an excellent project for beginners. The scarf is worked using simple knit stitches and basic color changes, making it a relaxing pattern that’s easy to follow. If you know how to cast on, knit, and bind off, you can make this cozy scarf.

    What yarn should I use?

This pattern is designed for #5 bulky yarn, which creates a warm, chunky scarf that works up quickly. Choose two coordinating colors to highlight the striped design, or substitute your favorite shades to match your wardrobe.

Can I make the scarf longer or shorter?

Absolutely! Simply continue knitting until the scarf reaches your desired length before binding off. You can also adjust the fringe length or omit it entirely for a cleaner, modern finish.

    Why are the edges curling?

Because the scarf is knit in stockinette stitch, the edges naturally curl. Steam blocking the finished scarf will help it relax and lay much flatter. I also recommend steam blocking the pockets before sewing them onto the scarf for the neatest finish.

Can I make this scarf in one color?

Yes! While the stripes give the scarf a fun, modern look, the pattern looks just as beautiful knit in a single solid color.

Is there an ad-free PDF available?

Yes! If you’d like a printable version of this pattern, an ad-free PDF is available in my shop. It’s perfect for printing or knitting from your tablet without distractions.
