Knit Seamlessly in the Round

This ponytail hat knitting pattern is worked seamlessly in the round, so there’s no side seam to sew when you’re finished. Knitting in the round also creates a smooth, comfortable hat that’s easy to pull on whenever you want to wear your hair up.

The open top is incorporated directly into the construction of the hat rather than closing the crown like a traditional beanie. This creates plenty of room to pull your ponytail or messy bun through while helping the hat stay comfortably in place.

A Cozy Hat for Ponytails and Messy Buns

Traditional winter hats can be frustrating when you prefer wearing your hair up. This knitted messy bun hat solves that problem by leaving the top open, allowing your hair to pass through without flattening your bun or forcing you to wear a low ponytail.

It’s especially convenient for walks, errands, outdoor activities, and casual winter days when you want to keep your hair out of the way. Once you’ve made one, experiment with different yarn colors to coordinate with your favorite coats and jackets. This easy messy bun hat knitting pattern is also a quick and useful handmade gift for anyone who loves wearing their hair up.

Tips for Knitting in the Round

Knitting in the round creates a seamless hat and eliminates the need to sew a side seam when you’re finished. If you’re new to circular knitting, these simple tips can help:

Make sure your stitches aren’t twisted. Before joining, check that all the cast-on stitches are facing the same direction around the needle.
Mark the beginning of the round. Place a stitch marker before joining so you always know where each new round begins.
Join carefully. Keep the first few stitches snug to prevent a gap where the round is joined.
Check your gauge. Knitting in the round can produce a different gauge than knitting flat, so make your gauge swatch accordingly.
Keep your tension even. Avoid pulling too tightly where the needle tips meet.
Count your stitches occasionally. A quick stitch count can help you catch accidental increases or dropped stitches early.
Try the hat on as you go. Circular knitting makes it easy to check the length and fit before finishing.

Once you get comfortable with the technique, knitting hats in the round is a quick and convenient way to create a smooth, seamless finish.

Frequently Asked Questions about Messy Bun Hat Knitting Pattern

Is this Messy Bun Hat Knitting Pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This Messy Bun Hat Knitting Pattern uses basic stitches and straightforward construction. If you’re comfortable with knitting and purling and are ready to practice knitting in the round, this is a great project for building your skills.

Does this hat have an opening at the top?

Yes. Unlike a traditional beanie with a closed crown, this hat is specifically designed with an opening at the top. Simply pull your ponytail or messy bun through the opening when you put the hat on.

Is this messy bun hat knit flat or in the round?

The hat is knit seamlessly in the round using circular knitting needles. There’s no side seam to sew when you’re finished, which gives the hat a smooth and comfortable fit.

How do I prevent my stitches from twisting when joining in the round?

Before joining, lay your circular needle on a flat surface and make sure the cast-on edge is facing the same direction all the way around. Once you’ve checked that the stitches aren’t twisted, place a marker and join the round.

Can I wear this hat with a ponytail?

Absolutely! The opening works for both messy buns and high ponytails. Adjust the position of your hair before putting on the hat so you can easily pull it through the opening.

Can I make the hat longer?

Yes. Simply work additional rounds before finishing the top opening. Adding extra length can create a slightly more relaxed fit, while working fewer rounds will give you a more fitted style.

Can I use a different yarn?

You can substitute another yarn of the same weight. Since yarns can vary in thickness, make a gauge swatch before starting to ensure your finished hat will be the correct size.

This Messy Bun Hat Knitting Pattern is a practical alternative to a traditional winter beanie, especially if you love wearing your hair up. The open top gives your ponytail or bun plenty of room while the rest of the hat keeps your head and ears cozy.

Choose a neutral shade for an everyday accessory or make several in different colors to coordinate with your favorite fall and winter outfits. It’s a fun, useful knit-in-the-round hat pattern that also makes a great handmade gift.
