What Are Container Candles?

Container candles are candles poured directly into jars, tins, mugs, or heat-safe containers instead of being freestanding.

Unlike pillar candles, container candles are designed to remain in the container while burning. This makes them:

Easier for beginners
Safer to burn
Easier to customize
More forgiving during the candle-making process

Container candles are perfect for:

Mason jars
Glass jars
Ceramic containers
Vintage cups
Metal tins
Minimal modern vessels

They also make excellent gifts because they look polished and professional with minimal effort.

Supplies Needed for DIY Container Candles

One of the best things about candle making is that you only need a few basic supplies.
      Double Broiler
Glass jars (you can clean the wax out of your old candle jars using this technique)
      Fragrance oil
      Paraffin wax
      Wood wicks
      Thermometer
      Glue gun

      How To Make Container Candles

You will need a double broiler to melt the wax. I used an old small saucepan inside a larger one filled with about 1 1/2 of water. Put the burner on medium-high heat. The wax will take approximately 7-10 minutes to melt (Please note- once you use a pot for melting wax, you should no longer use it for food)

While your wax is melting, proceed through the next few steps.

      How To Make Container Candles

You’ll need to preheat your glass containers to prevent bubbles and help the wax stick to the container. Put them in the oven on 150 degrees for approximately 5 minutes

      How To Make Container Candles

Take the wood wick and push it down on the metal holder that is included in the package.

      How To Make Container Candles

Using a glue gun, add a dab of glue to the bottom of the metal wick holder.

      How To Make Container Candles

While the glue is still wet, push the wick down in the center of the containers.

      How To Make Container Candles

Once your wax has completely melted, you can add the fragrance oil. The general rule is 1 oz for fragrance per 1 lb. of wax. Don’t overload on fragrance because the wax can only hold so much. If you use too much fragrance you’ll be left with a puddle at the bottom of the container after the wax dries.

Best Fragrance Ideas for Homemade Candles

One of the most fun parts of candle making is creating scent combinations.

      Popular scent combinations include:

      Vanilla + Lavender
      Coconut + Lime
      Orange + Clove
      Sea Salt + Jasmine
      Cedarwood + Amber
      Pumpkin + Cinnamon
      Eucalyptus + Mint

Seasonal candle collections are also incredibly popular.

      Summer Candle Scents

      Citrus
      Coconut
      Ocean breeze
      Lemon
      Watermelon

      Fall Candle Scents

      Pumpkin spice
      Apple cider
      Cinnamon vanilla
      Maple pecan

      Winter Candle Scents

      Pine
      Peppermint
      Cranberry
      Vanilla bean

      How To Make Container Candles

Once the temperature of the wax measures 170-175 degrees you can take it off the heat and slowly pour it into the containers.

      How To Make Container Candles

Let the wax cool for 6 hours minimum. I like to let mine cool overnight.

      How To Make Container Candles

After the wax has dried, trim the wicks (using nail clippers) down to 1/4 inch.

Safety tips (as with all candles) :

      Never leave candles unattended
Burn container candles only on a heat resistant surface. Containers can break.
Burn the candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
      Protect from drafts.
Keep the wick trimmed to ¼”
Keep away from children and pets.
Do not move the candle while it is burning or while there is molten wax in it.
      Keep away from flammable objects.

Common Mistakes When Making Container Candles

Even beginner-friendly candle projects can have a learning curve. Here are some of the most common mistakes candle makers run into and how to avoid them.

      Using the Wrong Wick Size

Wick size matters more than many beginners realize.

A wick that’s too small can create tunneling, while a wick that’s too large can burn too hot and produce excess soot.

Always choose a wick based on your container diameter and wax type.

      Overheating the Wax

Heating wax too hot can impact fragrance performance and candle appearance.

Use a thermometer and follow the wax manufacturer’s temperature recommendations.

Adding Fragrance at the Wrong Temperature

Fragrance oil added when the wax is too hot or too cool may not bind properly with the wax.

      This can weaken scent throw.

      Pouring Wax Too Quickly

Pouring too fast can create air bubbles and uneven tops.

Slow, steady pouring creates smoother candles.

      Moving the Candle While Cooling

      Candles should cool undisturbed.

Moving containers while the wax is setting can cause cracks or uneven surfaces.

      Forgetting to Cure the Candle

Soy candles often perform better after curing for several days before burning.

This improves scent throw and burn quality.

      DIY Candle Styling Ideas

Homemade candles also make beautiful home decor pieces.

      Try styling candles with:

      Wooden trays
      Coffee table books
      Dried flowers
      Lanterns
      Vintage jars
      Minimal neutral decor

      Candles work beautifully in:

      Farmhouse decor
      Coastal homes
      Minimal spaces
      Cozy cottage interiors
      Seasonal displays

You can even create coordinated candle collections for:

      Christmas
      Halloween
      Spring decor
      Summer entertaining

Frequently Asked Questions about How to Make Container Candles

What wax is best for beginner candle makers?

Soy wax is one of the best beginner-friendly waxes because it’s easy to work with, clean burning, and widely available.

How long should homemade candles cure?

Soy candles often benefit from curing for 3–14 days before burning. This can improve scent throw and overall performance.

      Why is my candle tunneling?

Tunneling usually happens when the wick is too small or the candle isn’t burned long enough during the first burn.

Can I use essential oils in candles?

Some people use essential oils, but fragrance oils formulated specifically for candle making usually provide stronger and more reliable scent throw.

Why does my candle have sinkholes or rough tops?

This is common with soy wax and often happens due to cooling temperatures. A heat gun can help smooth the top if needed.

Are homemade candles cheaper than store-bought candles?

Yes, especially when making multiple candles at once. DIY candles can be significantly more affordable than premium store brands.
