Diagonal blankets are especially satisfying to knit because you can see the shape grow with every row. The increases gradually expand the blanket until the center point is reached, and then the decreases shape the blanket back down to the final corner. The result is a classic corner-to-corner baby blanket that has a soft drape and elegant design.

This easy diagonal knit baby blanket is a wonderful project for knitters of all skill levels. Beginners will appreciate the simple construction, while experienced knitters will enjoy the relaxing rhythm of the pattern.

Even better, baby blankets are one of the most meaningful handmade gifts you can give. A hand-knit blanket can become a treasured keepsake that families hold onto for years.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Diagonal Knit Baby Blanket

There are so many reasons knitters love diagonal blankets. The technique is simple but creates a polished finished project that looks impressive.

Here are a few reasons this diagonal knit baby blanket pattern is such a great project:

• Beginner friendly construction
• Only basic knitting techniques required
• Relaxing repetitive rows
• Beautiful diagonal texture
• Perfect baby shower gift
• Great stash-buster project

Because the blanket grows gradually from one corner, you also have a lot of flexibility in adjusting the final size. If you’d like to make a slightly larger blanket, you can simply knit a few extra increase rows before beginning the decrease section.

This flexibility makes the pattern especially approachable for newer knitters.

What Is Diagonal Knitting?

Diagonal knitting is a technique where a project is worked from one corner to the opposite corner instead of from the bottom up or side to side.

This construction method is often called corner-to-corner knitting (C2C).

Instead of casting on many stitches at the start, the project begins with only a few stitches. Each row increases stitches along one edge until the blanket reaches its widest point. At that point, decreases begin to shape the opposite side of the square.

The result is a symmetrical blanket with a beautiful diagonal flow to the stitches.

Many knitters love diagonal knitting because:

• It feels satisfying to watch the shape grow
• It uses simple stitch techniques
• The finished fabric drapes beautifully

Tips for Knitting the Perfect Baby Blanket

If you’re new to knitting blankets, here are a few helpful tips to keep your project looking great.

    Keep Your Edges Neat

When knitting diagonal blankets, edges naturally become part of the finished design. Try to maintain even tension along the edges so the blanket keeps a smooth shape.

Many knitters like to slip the first stitch of each row to create a tidy edge.

    Use Soft, Washable Yarn

Baby blankets will likely be washed often, so choosing a machine washable yarn is always a good idea.

Yarns labeled “superwash wool,” acrylic blends, or cotton blends are all excellent choices.

    Block the Blanket When Finished

Blocking helps even out stitches and gives the blanket a more polished finished appearance.

Simply dampen the finished blanket, gently shape it, and allow it to dry flat.
