How to Paint Patio Cushions (An Easy Budget-Friendly Outdoor Makeover That Actually Lasts)
Learn how to paint patio cushions with this easy DIY tutorial. Refresh faded outdoor cushions with durable fabric paint for a budget-friendly patio makeover that looks brand new.

Outdoor patio cushions can get faded, stained, and worn out surprisingly fast—especially after a few seasons in the sun. But before you throw them away and spend hundreds replacing them, there’s an easier (and much cheaper) solution: paint them.
Yes, you really can paint outdoor cushions, and the results can completely transform your patio furniture. This easy DIY project is perfect for refreshing faded cushions, changing the color to match your outdoor decor, or giving old patio furniture a more modern look without replacing everything.
The best part? Painting patio cushions is surprisingly simple and can save you a ton of money.
Whether your cushions are faded from the sun, stained from years outdoors, or simply outdated, this step-by-step tutorial will show you exactly how to paint patio cushions so they look fresh, clean, and stylish again.
Why Paint Patio Cushions Instead of Replacing Them?
Outdoor cushions are expensive. A full replacement set can easily cost hundreds of dollars, especially for sectionals and larger seating areas.
Painting your patio cushions is a budget-friendly alternative that allows you to:
Refresh faded outdoor furniture
Change outdated cushion colors
Extend the life of your patio furniture
Create a custom outdoor look
Save money on replacements
Coordinate your cushions with your outdoor decor
If the cushion fabric is still structurally in good shape but simply looks worn or faded, painting is often the perfect solution.
This project works especially well on:
Outdoor patio sectionals
Outdoor chair cushions
Bench cushions
Seat cushions
Outdoor ottomans
Porch furniture cushions
Does Painting Outdoor Cushions Actually Work?
Yes—but using the right products matters.
Outdoor cushions are typically made from durable woven fabrics that absorb fabric paint surprisingly well. The key is using diluted outdoor fabric paint so the cushions stay soft and flexible instead of stiff.
When done correctly, painted patio cushions can last through an entire outdoor season and beyond.
The finish won’t feel exactly like brand-new fabric, but it’s often much softer and more natural-looking than most people expect.

I came across this Outdoor Fabric Paint by Rust-Oleum and I figured I’d give it a try. I created a video to show the paint in action and I’ll provide more info about the pros and cons of the paint below.

How to Paint Patio Cushions (An Easy Budget-Friendly Outdoor Makeover That Actually Lasts)
Start by cleaning off your cushions. I used a brush and a solution of dish soap and water. Let them dry thoroughly before painting. Shake the can of Outdoor Fabric Paint vigorously for one minute. Hold the can 6 inches away from the cushion and begin spraying using a back and forth motion. Let the cushion dry throughly between coats.
Step 1: Clean the Cushions Thoroughly
Before painting, clean your patio cushions really well.
Outdoor cushions collect:
Dirt
Pollen
Mold
Sunscreen residue
Mildew
Dust
Use mild soap and warm water to scrub the cushions clean. Rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before painting.
Painting dirty cushions can trap stains and prevent the paint from adhering evenly.
Step 2: Protect Your Work Area
Lay down a drop cloth or tarp before painting.
Fabric paint can soak through cushions, especially thinner seat pads, so it’s important to protect your patio or driveway.
If your cushions have zippers or piping you don’t want painted, use painter’s tape to mask those areas.
Step 4: Apply the First Coat of Rust-Oleum Outdoor Fabric Paint
Hold the spray can several inches away from the fabric and apply light, even coats.
The key here is:
Multiple thin coats.
Avoid saturating the fabric all at once.
The first coat will likely look uneven and patchy—that’s normal.
I worked in slow sweeping motions and gradually built up the color.
Step 5: Allow the Cushions to Dry
Outdoor fabric paint dries surprisingly quickly, especially in warm weather.
I allowed each coat to dry before adding another layer.
Drying time may vary depending on:
Temperature
Humidity
Sun exposure
Thickness of application
Step 6: Add Additional Coats
Most cushions need multiple coats for full even coverage.
I found that:
Thin coats gave the softest finish
Several light layers looked more natural
Gradually building coverage worked best
This is especially important if you’re covering faded patterns or darker fabric.

Pros of using Outdoor Fabric Paint by Rust-Oleum
Cheaper than buying new cushions
Very easy to use
Durable- the paint doesn’t chip or scratch off.
The paint is UV resistant.
The cushions still feel soft after painting.
Cons of using Outdoor Fabric Paint by Rust-Oleum
The only con with this DIY is the amount of paint required. You’ll need many cans of paint to update your cushions. I used 10 cans of spray paint for my patio set. I used approximately 2 cans of spray paint per cushion. This was still considerably cheaper than buying new cushions. It was also less money than the outdoor fabric by the yard I considered buying to recover the cushions. The first coat of paint goes on thin, so 2 coats are needed.
How the Cushions Felt After Painting
One of the biggest questions people ask is whether painted patio cushions feel stiff afterward.
The cushions did feel slightly firmer than brand-new fabric, but they were still comfortable and much softer than I expected.
Using thin coats instead of heavy spraying makes a huge difference.
The fabric still retained flexibility, and the finish looked surprisingly natural once fully dry.
How Long Does Outdoor Fabric Paint Last?
Rust-Oleum Outdoor Fabric Paint holds up well outdoors, especially when the furniture is somewhat protected.
Longevity depends on:
Weather exposure
Rain
Direct sunlight
Frequency of use
Cushion fabric type
To help painted cushions last longer:
Store cushions during winter
Use furniture covers
Keep cushions dry when possible
Reapply paint for touch-ups as needed

Patio Styling Ideas After Painting Cushions

I styled the patio with:
Blue and white outdoor pillows
A neutral outdoor rug
