When the zipper on your jeans breaks, it can be tempting to throw the pair in the trash. Zipper replacement at a tailor can be expensive and tackling the job by yourself can seem intimidating. The good news is, replacing a zipper is totally doable as long as you have some basic sewing skills!
The first step is to remove the broken zipper using a seam ripper. You’ll have to pull out the stitching along the sides of the zipper and a small section on the waistband to free the top of the zipper. Then, you pin the new zipper in place and sew it using a zipper foot.
Supplies needed to repair your jeans:
Replacement zipper
Sewing machine
Thread in jeans color and in topstitching color
How to Replace a Broken Zipper on Jeans
Using a seam ripper and starting on one side of the zipper, pull out the stitching. You will also have to remove a small section of stitching on the waistband to free the top of the zipper.
Pull out the stitching until the side of the zipper comes free. Be sure to remove all the stitching securing the zipper. Yanking the zipper from the jeans could make a hole. It’s best to take your time doing this part.
Remove the zipper from the other side by pulling out the stitching.
Sandwich the new zipper between the flap and the fly shield. Tuck the end of the top of the zipper into the waistband slit you opened earlier. Pin in place.
Sew the zipper side in place. using a zipper foot.
Pin the other side of the zipper to the jeans and stitch down.
Sew the openings on the waistband closed.
