How to Build an Easy Platform for a Playhouse

If you’re planning to add a backyard playhouse for your kids, building a sturdy platform is one of the most important steps. A raised playhouse platform keeps the structure level, protects it from moisture, and creates a safe and durable base that will last for years.

This DIY playhouse platform is a simple woodworking project that most homeowners can complete in a weekend using basic tools and materials. Even if you don’t have much construction experience, this project is beginner friendly and easy to customize based on the size of your playhouse.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to build an easy platform for a playhouse step by step, along with helpful tips to ensure your structure is strong, level, and safe for kids.

Why Your Playhouse Needs a Platform

A solid base is essential for any outdoor structure, including playhouses, sheds, or garden buildings.

Here are a few reasons why building a playhouse platform is important:

Keeps the structure level

A level platform prevents the playhouse from leaning or shifting over time.

Protects from moisture

Raising the playhouse slightly off the ground helps prevent water damage and rot.

Creates a sturdy foundation

A platform provides strong support for the floor and walls of the playhouse.

Improves durability

A properly built base helps your playhouse last much longer.

Many backyard structures use a similar raised platform design, which is why this project is also useful if you’re building other outdoor projects. You can find more backyard inspiration in my Outdoor DIY Projects section.

Above is the “before” picture. The platform also makes it easier to edge the grass around the house. Before I was worried about damaging the cedar and plastic with my string trimmer.

Cedar is a durable outdoor wood, but it’s not ideal for ground contact. A platform would not only be cleaner, but it would also extend the life of the playhouse.

I had some composite deck boards leftover from my old porch as well as some 4x4x8 posts leftover from a fence I removed…making the grand total for this project $0!

Materials needed:
4×4 pressure-treated posts (I used 4x4x8 and cut them in half)
Deck boards (it’s not necessary to buy composite-it’s expensive, wood deck boards will be fine)
2×4 pressure-treated (for the front of the platform)
2 inch exterior screws

Hardware

• Exterior screws

Tools

• Circular saw or miter saw
• Power drill
• Level
• Tape measure
• Shovel
• Safety equipment

Using outdoor-rated hardware ensures your platform will remain strong and weather resistant.

Step 1: Choose the Location

The first step when building a playhouse platform is choosing the right spot in your yard.

Look for a location that is:

• Relatively flat
• Well-drained
• Safe and visible from the house
• Away from large tree roots

Once you select the location, clear the area of grass, rocks, and debris so you have a clean workspace.

Step 2: Measure the Platform Area

Next, measure the size of your playhouse so you know how large the platform needs to be.

The platform should match the dimensions of the playhouse base. For example, if your playhouse measures 6×6 feet, your platform should also be approximately 6×6 feet.

Mark the corners using stakes and string to outline the area.

This step helps ensure the platform is square before construction begins.

I made my platform 4×5 feet, but you can easily customize the size. I cut the 4x4s so they measured 4 feet each. I spaced the end ones 5 feet apart and centered the middle.

Step 3: Prepare the Ground

Before building the frame, prepare the ground underneath the platform.

You can:
• Add gravel for drainage
• Level the ground using a shovel

Gravel is especially helpful because it improves drainage and helps prevent water buildup under the structure.

Step 4: Build the Frame

The next step is building the wooden frame that will support the playhouse floor.

Use pressure-treated 2×6 boards or Deck Boards to build a rectangular frame. Attach the boards together using exterior screws.

Make sure to measure diagonally across the frame to ensure it is perfectly square.

Once the frame is assembled, double-check that it sits level on the ground.

Step 5: Check That the Platform Is Level

Before placing the playhouse on top of the platform, check that the structure is completely level.

Use a long level to test several areas of the frame and floor.

If necessary, adjust the posts or add shims to correct small uneven spots.

A level platform ensures the playhouse will sit evenly and remain stable.

Once I finished screwing the deck boards in place, I pushed the playhouse on to the platform. I screwed the playhouse to the platform on the sides, so it wouldn’t shift.

Step 6: Place the Playhouse on the Platform

Once the platform is complete, you can place your playhouse on top.

Many prefabricated playhouses are designed to sit directly on a flat base. If you built your own playhouse, secure the structure to the platform using screws or brackets.

This helps keep the playhouse stable and safe.

Outdoor-rated screws are stronger and resist rust.

Check measurements carefully

Accurate measurements ensure the platform is square and stable.

These small details can make a big difference in the durability of your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a playhouse platform be?

Most playhouse platforms are 4–12 inches above ground level. This height keeps the structure protected from moisture while still allowing easy access for kids.

If your yard slopes, you may need taller support posts on one side to keep the platform level.

What wood should I use for a playhouse platform?

Pressure-treated lumber is the best choice for outdoor structures because it resists moisture, insects, and decay.

Common choices include:

• Pressure-treated pine
• Cedar
• Outdoor-rated plywood

Using outdoor-rated materials will help your platform last longer.

Can I build a playhouse platform without digging holes?

Yes, some platforms can be built directly on level ground using concrete blocks or deck blocks for support.

However, digging shallow holes and adding gravel improves stability and drainage.

How long does it take to build a playhouse platform?

Most DIYers can build a simple playhouse platform in one day.

If you’re working alone or adding extra support posts, it may take a full weekend.

Do I need a permit to build a playhouse platform?

In most cases, small backyard playhouses do not require permits, but regulations vary depending on location.

Check your local building codes if you’re unsure.

Safety Tips for Backyard Playhouses

When building a DIY playhouse platform, safety should always be a top priority. Because children will be using the structure regularly, it’s important to make sure the platform is strong, stable, and free of hazards.

First, always check that the platform frame is completely level before placing the playhouse on top. A level base helps prevent the structure from shifting or leaning over time. If your yard is slightly uneven, you can adjust the height of the support posts or add gravel underneath the frame to create a stable foundation.

Next, make sure all screws and fasteners are installed securely. Loose boards or exposed screws can create safety risks, especially for younger children who may be climbing or playing around the playhouse.

It’s also a good idea to smooth any rough edges or corners using sandpaper. This simple step helps prevent splinters and creates a cleaner finished look for your project.

Another helpful tip is to leave enough space around the playhouse so kids can move safely in and out of the structure. If the playhouse includes a small porch or ladder, make sure those areas are secure and easy to access.

Once the platform is finished, check it periodically to ensure everything remains stable and secure. Outdoor structures experience weather changes throughout the year, so occasional maintenance can help extend the life of your project.
