The first time I made this recipe, it tasted amazing, but the sides were burned. The second time I tried adding more liquid and I still ended up with burnt sides. The burnt sides were a real pain to clean that involved a series of soaking and scraping. The mess was such a hassle to clean that it made me questions if I ever wanted to make this delicious oatmeal again! Luckily, I didn't have to make that choice! After doing some research I found that you could put an oven safe dish inside the slow cooker! (This may be obvious to a lot of people, but I had no idea!) I put all the ingredients inside the oven safe dish and poured water into the slow cooker- I stopped approximately 1 inch below the rim of the oven safe dish.
I was so pleased to see that the sides didn't burn! Plus, this little dish is much easier to clean that the big slow cooker. Now, I can make this apple pie oatmeal without worrying about messy cleanup!
