This baby Santa hat is knit in the round, so there’s no bulky seam running along the back. The seamless construction creates a comfortable fit for little ones and gives the finished hat a neat, professional appearance. The pattern is an approachable choice for knitters who are comfortable using circular needles and making basic yarn color changes.
The design includes several beginner-friendly features:
Uses basic knit and purl stitches
Knit seamlessly in the round
Includes simple red and black color changes
Features an easy, separately knit gold buckle
Finished with a fluffy white yarn pom-pom
Available in two baby and toddler sizes
Works up quickly using uncomplicated construction
Uses only small amounts of the accent colors
The main portion of the hat is worked in red, with a few rounds of black yarn forming Santa’s belt. The gold buckle is knit separately and sewn onto the center of the belt after the hat is finished. Making the buckle separately eliminates the need for complicated stranded colorwork and allows you to adjust its shape and placement before securing it to the hat.
Complete the design by attaching a large white pom-pom to the top. You can make one from yarn for a soft, classic look or use a removable faux-fur pom-pom if preferred. Be sure to attach all embellishments securely when making the hat for a baby or toddler.
A Festive Handmade Baby Gift
Available in sizes 6–12 months and 12–24 months, this knitted Santa hat is perfect for celebrating a baby’s first or second Christmas. It makes a thoughtful handmade gift for new parents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other special little ones. Since the pattern works up relatively quickly, it’s also a great choice when you need a memorable last-minute Christmas gift.
The finished hat makes an especially charming accessory for family pictures, Christmas cards, holiday parties, winter walks and Christmas morning. Pair it with festive pajamas, a cozy cream sweater or a warm winter coat to create an irresistibly cute seasonal outfit.
This project is also a practical way to use leftover yarn. While red is the main color, only small amounts of black, gold and white are needed for the belt, buckle and pom-pom. The combination of simple construction, cheerful colors and an instantly recognizable Santa design makes this baby hat a fun project you’ll enjoy knitting and gifting during the holiday season.

Frequently Asked Questions about Easy Santa’s Belt Buckle Baby Hat Knitting Pattern
Is this Santa baby hat suitable for beginners?
Yes. This pattern uses basic knit stitches, simple color changes and straightforward crown decreases. You should be comfortable knitting in the round before beginning.
What sizes are included?
The pattern includes instructions for babies and toddlers in sizes 6–12 months and 12–24 months. Because every child is different, checking the finished measurements and knitting a gauge swatch will help you choose the best size.
What type of yarn should I use?
Choose a soft, washable yarn that feels comfortable against a baby’s skin. Red is used for the main hat, while small amounts of black, gold and white create the belt, buckle and pom-pom.
How is the belt buckle made?
The gold buckle is knit separately and sewn onto the center of the black stripe after the hat is complete. This method is easier than stranded colorwork and lets you adjust the buckle’s position before attaching it securely.
Can I use a faux-fur pom-pom?
Yes. A white yarn pom-pom gives the hat a classic handmade appearance, but a faux-fur pom-pom also works well. Attach it securely and supervise babies whenever they wear hats with embellishments.
Can I knit the hat flat instead?
The pattern is specifically written for knitting in the round. Converting it to flat knitting would require adding edge stitches, changing some stitch instructions and sewing a back seam.
