Beginner-friendly: A simple, repetitive design makes this scarf a great project for crocheters of all skill levels.
No color changes required: Self-striping yarn creates beautiful stripes automatically as you crochet, eliminating the need to switch yarn colors.

How to make a Half Double Crochet

The half double crochet (abbreviated as hdc) is a versatile stitch that falls between a single and double crochet in height. Here’s how to make it:

Steps:

  1. Make a Slipknot and Chain
Start by making a slipknot and chain the desired number of stitches (usually indicated by your pattern).
  2. Yarn Over (yo)
Wrap the yarn over your hook once before inserting it into the stitch.
  3. Insert the Hook
Skip the first chain from the hook (this is your turning chain). Insert your hook into the second chain or into the stitch you want to work into.
  4. Yarn Over Again
    Yarn over the hook again.
  5. Pull Through the Stitch
Pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have 3 loops on your hook.
  6. Yarn Over and Pull Through All Loops
Yarn over one more time and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. This completes your half double crochet stitch!
  7. Repeat
Continue yarning over, inserting the hook into the next stitch, yarning over again, pulling through, and finishing with one more yarn over through all loops.
  8. Next Row
When you reach the end of the row, chain 1 or 2 (depending on your pattern) and turn your work. Continue stitching hdc across the next row.

The half double crochet creates a nice, medium-height stitch that’s great for adding texture and warmth to your projects!

Crochet Abbreviations

ch – Chain
sc – Single crochet
hdc – Half double crochet
st(s) – Stitch(es)
BLO – Back loop only

Pattern Notes

The scarf is worked lengthwise in rows.
The beginning chain determines the length of the scarf.
The turning chain at the beginning of the half double crochet rows counts as the first stitch.
Working in the back loops only creates a textured, ribbed effect.
The self-striping yarn changes colors naturally as you crochet, so there’s no need to change colors manually.

Pattern instructions:

Foundation Chain:

Chain 121.

Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (120 sc)

Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as the first hdc) and turn. Working in the back loops only (BLO), half double crochet (hdc) in the next stitch and in each stitch across until one stitch remains. Work 1 hdc through both loops of the last stitch.

Rows 3–11: Chain 2 (counts as the first hdc) and turn. Working in the back loops only, hdc in the next stitch and in each stitch across until you reach the beginning chain-2 from the previous row. Work 1 hdc into the top of the beginning chain-2.

Row 12: Chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in the first stitch and in each stitch across, working the final sc into the top of the beginning chain-2 from the previous row.

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a tail to weave in.

Finishing

Step 1: Weave in the Ends

Using a yarn needle, weave in all loose yarn ends on the wrong side of the scarf. Trim any excess yarn.

Step 2: Make the Tassels

Make four tassels using the same self-striping yarn. For a fuller appearance, wrap the yarn several times around a piece of cardboard or another object approximately the length you’d like your tassels to be.

Tie the strands together securely at the top, then wrap an additional piece of yarn around the upper portion to create the tassel head. Trim the ends evenly.

Step 3: Attach the Tassels

Attach one tassel to each of the four corners of the scarf. Secure the tassels with a knot and weave in the remaining ends.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Easy Self-Striping Crochet Scarf

Is this crochet scarf pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! This easy self-striping crochet scarf pattern is perfect for beginners who know how to make a chain, single crochet, and half double crochet stitches. The simple, repetitive rows make it a relaxing project that’s easy to follow.

What is the best yarn for this crochet scarf?

I used Caron Tea Cakes in Rainforest, a super bulky self-striping yarn that creates beautiful color changes without switching yarns. You can substitute another #6 super bulky weight yarn, although the finished appearance and size may vary.

How much yarn do I need to crochet this scarf?

Plan on approximately 180–220 yards of super bulky yarn for a 60-inch scarf, including the four decorative tassels. The exact amount depends on your tension and the finished width.

Can I make this crochet scarf longer or shorter?

Absolutely! Since the scarf is crocheted lengthwise, simply adjust the number of chains in the foundation row. Add chains for a longer scarf or use fewer chains for a shorter version.

Why is this scarf worked in the back loops only?

Working half double crochet stitches in the back loops creates a beautiful ribbed texture. This simple technique adds dimension to the scarf and makes the self-striping colors stand out.

Do I have to add tassels?

Not at all! The tassels are completely optional. You can leave the ends plain for a simpler, more classic look.
