Yarn: Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Pumpkin and in Ecru (#4 worsted weight yarn, 2 skeins of each color)
Needles: Size US 8 single point knitting needles
Gauge: 26 sts = about 4 in. (slightly stretched)
Size: Scarf measures approximately 50 inches long

Note: How to join colors when rib knitting

Changing colors when rib knitting creates yarn bumps from purl stitches that show on the right-hand side. The simplest way to get cleans stripes is to knit a row when changing color. Then, on the next row proceed to knit in ribbing. The single knit row isn’t visible and the stripes won’t have any bumps.

    Choosing Yarn

Soft yarn makes all the difference when knitting for children.

    Look for yarn that’s:

    Soft against sensitive skin
    Machine washable
    Durable
    Warm without being bulky

    Great choices include:

    Acrylic
    Superwash wool
    Wool blends
    Merino wool
    Soft cotton blends

A smooth yarn also helps the stripes stand out beautifully.

    How to Customize Your Scarf

One of the best things about this pattern is how easy it is to personalize.

    You can easily adjust:

    Length

Knit a shorter scarf for toddlers or a longer scarf for older children.

    Width

Cast on additional stitches to make a wider, cozier scarf.

    Stripe Size

    Experiment with:

    Thin stripes
    Wide stripes
    Color blocks
    Ombre colors
    Scrappy stripes

Every version looks a little different while still using the same simple pattern.

    Knitting Tips

Weave in Ends as You Go

Since striped scarves involve several color changes, weaving in the ends throughout the project saves time later.

    Carry Colors Neatly

If your stripes are narrow, carrying the unused yarn up the edge can reduce the number of ends to weave in.

    Check Your Tension

Try to keep each stripe the same width by maintaining even tension throughout the project.

    Why Knit Flat?

Many beginners prefer knitting flat because it allows them to focus on the basics without worrying about knitting in the round.

    Flat knitting is:

    Easier to learn
    Great for beginners
    Relaxing
    Portable
    Perfect for TV knitting
