Kids Seed Stitch Poncho Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Bernat Super Fluffee in Pine (2 skeins)
Needles: US 11 Straight knitting needles and size US 11, 16-inch circular knitting needles (for the turtleneck)
Gauge: 11 sts and 14 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch
Sizes: ages 2-4 to fit chest measurement 21-23 inches
ages 6-8 to fit chest measurement 25-26 1⁄2 inches
Pattern instructions:
Note: Poncho is worked in one piece. Collar is picked up along neck edge after Poncho piece is complete.
Poncho: Beg at lower front, cast on 61 (65) sts.
Row 1: (RS). *K1. P1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
Row 2: *P1. K1. Rep from * to last st. P1.
Repeat last 2 rows for Seed stitch pattern. Work until the piece measures 14 (16 1/2 inches) from the beginning, ending on a wrong side row.
Shape the Neck:
Pattern 25 (26) sts (neck edge). Cast off 11 (13) sts. Work in pattern to the end of row. Join the 2nd ball of yarn.
Working both sides at same time and keeping continue of pat, decrease 1 st at each neck edge on next 4 rows. 21 (22) sts.
Continue working even in pattern until 16 (18 1⁄2) inches total length, ending on a WS row.
Back neck:
Next row: (RS). Pat across 21 (22) sts. Cast on 19 (21) sts. Pat across 21 (22) sts.
61 (65) sts.
Continue working even in pattern until the work from last cast on edge measures 16 (18 1⁄2) inches total length, ending on a WS row. Cast off in pattern.
For the turtleneck:
With RS facing, pick up and knit 53 (55) sts around neck edge to opposite marker. Work in pattern for 3 inches. Bind off loosely.
Finishing:
Sew 4 buttons (2 on each side) through all thicknesses on each side to create armholes.
