What is Focaccia Bread?
Focaccia bread is a type of Italian flatbread that is known for its distinct texture and flavor. It is similar to pizza dough but is typically thicker and softer. Focaccia is made from simple ingredients, including flour, water, yeast, olive oil, salt, and sometimes herbs such as rosemary. The dough is typically stretched or pressed into a flat, rectangular shape and then dimpled with the fingers to create small pockets on the surface. This process allows the olive oil and herbs to infuse into the bread, giving it a rich and savory taste.
What is Focaccia Art?
Focaccia art, also known as “focaccia decor” or “decorative focaccia,” is a creative culinary trend that involves using the traditional Italian flatbread, focaccia, as a canvas for artistic and decorative designs. This trend gained popularity on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where food artists and enthusiasts showcase their skills in turning simple focaccia bread into visually stunning and edible works of art.

Ingredients:
- 4 cups All-purpose flour
- 1 packet Active dry yeast 2 1/4 tsp
- 1 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/3 cups water heated to 110-115 degrees Farenheit
- 1 1/2 tbsp Olive oil plus more for drizzling
For the Halloween decorations:
Red onion
Sweet potato
Olives
Cherry tomatoes
Fresh herbs ( I used thyme and oregano)
Directions:
Mix the yeast, water, and sugar in a large bowl. The ideal water temperature for yeast is 110 to 115 (use a candy thermometer to ensure correct temperature). Water temperature is very important. If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast and it won’t rise. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes.
Add the flour and olive oil and stir until dough is shaggy.
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until the dough is smooth. Shape it into a ball and place it into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a dish towel and place it in a warm location. Since it’s warm in my house, I left my bowl on the kitchen counter, but you can also put it in the oven with only the oven light on. Leave the dough for 1 hour until it has doubled in size.
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out until it is approximately 1/2 inch thick. Leave the shape as it or cut it into a rectangle or circle.
The next step is to dimple the dough. Creating holes reduces the air in the dough and prevents the bread from rising too quickly. You can use a straw, or the end of a wooden spoon.
Now comes the fun part- adding the garnishes! I created a Halloween scene using sweet potato slices carved as jack o’ lantern. I added fresh herbs (make sure to coat them in olive oil before adding so they don’t burn), a red onion moon, olive bats and cherry tomatoes. Drizzle with olive oil.
Bake in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
