(for the scarf) Size US 8 single point knitting needles

Note: How to join colors when rib knitting
Changing colors when rib knitting creates yarn bumps from purl stitches that show on the right-hand side. The simplest way to get cleans stripes is to knit a row when changing color. Then, on the next row proceed to knit in ribbing. The single knit row isn’t visible and the stripes won’t have any bumps.
Pattern instructions for the hat:
With the orange yarn, cast on 90 sts.
Row 1 (right side): K3, p2, *k2, p2; rep from * to last st, p last st.
Rows 2-12: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Change to the white yarn.
Note: The first RS row of a new color is knit for a smooth transition from one color to the next.
Row 13: With the white yarn, knit.
Row 14: Repeat Row 1.
Rows 15-18: Repeat Row 2.
Change to the orange yarn.
Row 19: Knit across the round.
Row 20: Repeat Row 1.
Rows 21-28: Repeat Row 2.
Change to the white yarn.
Row 29: Knit across the round.
Row 30: Repeat Row 1.
Row 31: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 32-34: Repeat Row 2.
Change to the white yarn
Knit across the row.
Next Row: Repeat Row 1.
Next 2 Rows: Repeat Row 2.
Shape Crown:
Row 1 (RS): K3, *p2tog, k2; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1 (68 sts)
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the p sts.
Row 3: K2tog, k1, *p1, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2 – 46 sts.
Rows 4 and 5: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Row 6: P2tog across – 23 sts.
Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through a yarn needle and remove the stitches on the knitting needles. Pull to tighten and weave in ends.
Pattern instructions for the scarf:
With the orange yarn, cast on 46 sts.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 10 rows.
(Note- the yarn can either be broken after each color change or it can be carried up the side)
Stripe pattern:
Switch to the white yarn.
Next row: Knit for 1 row.
Next row: Return to K2, P2 ribbing for 5 rows.
Switch to the orange yarn.
Next row: Knit for 1 row.
Next row: Return to K2, P2 ribbing for 9 rows.
