    Free Knitting Pattern
    Cast on 60 st with the circular needles. Join together.
    Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 7 inches.

    Crown Shaping
    Row 1: K2, P2, K2, P2 together across row (53 sts)
    Row 2: K2, P2, K2 together, P1 across row (46 sts)
    Row 3: K2 together, P2, K1, P1 across row (38 sts)
    Row 4: K1, P2 together, K1, P1 across row  (30 sts)
    Row 5: K1, K2 together across row (20 sts)

    Row 6: K2 together across row (10 sts)
    Row 7: K2 together across row (5 sts)
    Cut yarn leaving a long end. Pull through stitches and pull to tighten. Knot and weave in ends.

    Brim:
    With the straight needles, pick up 12 sts across the front of the hat. Start at the beginning of either a purl rib or knit rib, not in the middle. Work in stockinette stitch for 5 rows. Bind off. Use a yarn needle to sew the top of the brim to the hat.

    Ear Flaps (make 2)
    On the side of the hat pick up 10 stitches using the straight needles.
    Start at the beginning of either a knit rib, not in the middle.
    Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 4 rows.
    Dec row 1: K2 together, P2, K2 across row (9 sts)
    Dec row 2: P2 together, K2, P2, K2, P1 (8 sts)
    Dec row 3: P2 together, P1, K2,  P2, K1 (7 sts)

    Dec row 4: K2 together, K1, P2, K2 (6 sts)
    Dec row 5: P2 together, K2, P2 (5 sts)
    Dec row 6: K2 together, P2, K1 (4 sts)
    Dec row 7: P2 together, K2 together (2 sts). Bind off leaving a 8 inch tail.
    Cut another 16 inch strand insert it through the binded off stitches. Braid and knot a pom pom on the end.
