Step 1: Cut the Circles for the Face

I traced the circles using a very large serving bowl as a pattern.

If you don’t have something large to trace, use the following technique:

Cutting a large circle out of fabric can be easy with the right technique. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

What You’ll Need:

  • Fabric
  • Chalk or fabric marker
  • Measuring tape or a ruler
  • Scissors
  • String and a pin or pencil (for making a compass)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric: Lay your fabric flat on a clean surface. If it’s wrinkled, iron it first for more accurate cutting.
  2. Find the Center: Determine the center of where you want the circle on your fabric. If you need a specific size, fold your fabric in half, and then in half again (so it’s folded into quarters). The folded corner will be the center of your circle.
  3. Create a Makeshift Compass:
    • Option 1: Use string. Cut a piece of string half the length of your desired circle’s diameter. Pin or tape one end of the string at the center point of your circle, and tie the other end to a piece of chalk or a fabric marker. Keep the string taut and trace the circle.
    • Option 2: Use a ruler. Hold the ruler at the center point and move it around, marking the radius (half the diameter) all the way around to create a circle outline.
  4. Trace the Circle: Once you’ve created your guide with chalk or a fabric marker, you’ll have a clean circle outline to follow.
  5. Cut the Circle: Carefully cut along the outline with sharp fabric scissors, keeping your hand steady to avoid jagged edges.

And that’s it! You now have a perfect large circle cut from fabric.

Step 2: Create Jack Skellington’s Face

Using black felt or fabric, cut out the shapes for Jack Skellington’s eyes, nose, and signature stitched smile. If you need help, print out a reference image of Jack’s face to use as a guide.

  • Eyes: Two large, oval shapes with slight points at the top.
  • Nose: Two small oval shapes.
  • Mouth: A long, curved line with small vertical stitches for his smile.

Step 3: Position the Face

Once your shapes are cut out, lay them on the pillow cover to decide on the perfect placement. You’ll want to make sure everything is evenly spaced and centered.

Step 4: Sew or Glue the Face to the Pillow

When you’re happy with the placement, hand sew or use fabric glue to attach the felt pieces to the pillow cover.

Step 5: Sew Around the Pillow

Place the right sides of the pillow together. Using a sewing machine, sew around the edge, leaving a 5 inch opening so you can turn the pillow right side out.

Step 5: Stuff the Pillow
Stuff the pillow with fiber fill and sew the opening closed.
