Baby Checkered Hat Knitting Pattern- a festive and fun hat that showcases beginner-friendly colorwork!
This hat combines festive checkers with a playful shape. Each pattern row is worked using one color yarn. The stitches of the color you are not using are simply slipped on to the right needle.
This pattern is ideal for knitters that are new to working with 2 colors at the same time.
Abbreviations used in this pattern:
Sl2P- slip 2 stitches purlwise. Pass the stitches from the left needle to the right. Do not knit or purl these stitches.
Baby Checkered Hat Knitting Pattern
Yarn: Lion Brand Heartland in Redwood (1 skein), Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Ecru (1 skein)
Needles: Size US 5 single point knitting needles, size US 8 single point
Guage: 2 inches= 8 sts.
Size: 18-24 months
Note- the hat is worked in one piece.
With the smaller needles and the Main Color, cast on 43 sts.
Work in Garter Stitch for 1 1/2 inches, ending on the wrong side row. On the last row increase 3 stitches evenly across (46 sts)
Change to larger needles and work in pattern.
Pattern (these 8 rows):
Row 1: (wrong side). (with red), knit across.
Row 2: (with white) K1. *Sl2P. K5. Rep from * to last 3 sts. Sl2P. K1.
Row 3: (with white) K1. *Sl2P. P5. Rep from * to last 3 sts. Sl2P. K1.
Row 4: (with red) K3. *Sl2P. K1. Sl2P. K2. Rep from * to last st. K1
Row 5: (with red) K1. *P2. Sl2P. K1. Sl2P. Rep from * to last 3 sts. P2. K1.
Row 6: (with white) Same as Row 2.
Row 7: (with white) Same as Row 3.
Row 8: (with red) Knit across.
Work in pattern for 48 rows, ending on a wrong side row.
With red color, work in Garter Stitch for 2 inches.
Beginning with the 1st row of the pattern, work for 49 more rows.
Switch to smaller needles and work in Garter Stitch for 1 1/2 inches. Bind off.
Fold the hat over and sew together at both sides. Weave in ends. Make and attach small pom poms at sides.
