Easy Kids Stocking Hat Knitting Pattern- a beginner-friendly pattern for this festive and fun kid’s hat!

This long tail stocking hat is knit on circular needles. When you reach the tail part, you switch to double point needles. The pattern is very straight forward. The brim is knit is rib stitch and the rest of the hat is knit in stockinette stitch.

I used Barcelona Big for this project, which I believe is only sold at Michael’s stores. It’s an oversized skein weighing 8.8 oz and it contains 410 yards. There’s plenty of yarn leftover for a second hat or another knitting project.

Easy Kids Stocking Hat Knitting Pattern

Needles: Size US 10 circular, 16-inch and size US 10 double point knitting needles

Guage: 2 inches = 7 sts

Size: Hat is very stretchy (my son is 5 1/2 years old, This hat could easily fit a larger child)

Cast on 60 sts. Join ends together being careful not to twist. Place marker for beginning of
round.
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 6 rows.

Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 8 inches from the cast-on edge.

Decrease round: *Knit 8, place marker, k2tog, rep from * around – (54 sts)

Work in stockinette stitch for an additional 8 rounds.

Switch to double point needles when needed.

Decrease round: *knit to marker, slip marker, k2tog, rep from * around – (48 sts)

Work in stockinette stitch for 8 rounds.

Repeat Decrease Round every 8 rounds 6 more times until 12 sts remain.
Knit 10 rounds

Decrease round: K2tog around (6 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull through remaining stitches to gather. Weave in ends. Make and attach pom pom.
