If you’re a beginner knitter, there are a few terms in this pattern that you might be unfamiliar with. One is an increase technique and the other is used to decrease a stitch.

KFB- means knit in the front and back of a stitch. It’s a simple way to increase a stitch.

SKP- means slip, knit, and pass over. Slip the stitch onto the right needle, knit in the next stitch, and move it to the right needle. Then, slip the slipped stitch over the knit one.

Yarn: Lion Brand Landscapes in Apple Orchard (2 skeins)

Needles: Size US 8 single point knitting needles

Guage:

Size: Women’s one size

Cast on 80 sts. Work in Garter Stitch for 3 1/2 inches.

Increase

Row 1:

Next Row: K2, *kfb, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, kfb, k2. (96 sts)

Row 1 (Right side): K2, *yo, skp, k2; rep from * across to last 2 sts, yo, skp.
Row 2: P2, *yo, p2tog, p2; rep from * across to last 2 sts, yo, p2tog.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approximately 9 inches from beginning.
End with Row 2.

Shape crown:

From this point on, the hat is worked in Garter Stitch.

Row 1: *K2tog, k6; rep from * to end of row (84 sts)

Row 2: Knit across.

Row 3: *K2tog, k5; rep from * to end of row (72 sts)

Row 4: Knit across.
