Yarn: Lion Brand Comfy Cotton in Driftwood (2 skeins)
Needles: Size US 5 single point knitting needles, Size US 5 circular, 16 inch
Gauge: 2 inches = 8 sts in stockinette stitch
Size: Kids Small/Medium (for reference, my son is almost 5 years old)
Pattern instructions:
BACK
Cast on 120 sts.
Work in Garter stitch until the piece measures about 3 in. from the beginning.
Next Row (WS): Work in Garter st as established over first 14 sts, place marker, purl to last 14 sts, place marker, work in Garter st to end of row.
Work even, keeping first and last 14 sts in Garter st, slipping markers as you come to them and working remaining stitches between markers in St st until piece measures about 17 in. from beg, end with a WS (purl) row.
Shape neck
Next Row (RS): K to marker, slip marker, knit 33 and slip the last 47 sts onto a stitch holder for right side; bind off next 26 sts for back neck; k to end of row – 47 sts.
Left Side
Left side is worked over 47 sts on needle.
Row 1 (WS): K to marker, slip marker, purl to end of row.
Row 2: Bind off 2 sts, knit to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row – 45 sts.
Row 3: Knit to marker, slip marker, purl to end of row.
Row 4: K2tog, knit to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row – 44 sts.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 once more – 43 sts.
Bind off.
Right Side
Place 47 right side sts from holder back onto needle ready to work a WS row.
Row 1 (WS): Bind off 2 sts, purl to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row – 45 sts.
Row 2: Knit to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row.
Row 3: P2tog, purl to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row – 44 sts.
Row 4: Knit to marker, slip marker, knit to end of row.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 once more – 43 sts.
Bind off.
FRONT
Repeat as for back.
Sew pieces together at shoulder seams.
HOOD
From RS and starting at center right front, pick up and knit 88 evenly spaced stitches.
Row 1 (WS): Knit 7, place marker, purl to last 7 sts, place marker, knit to end of row.
Row 2: Knit, slipping markers as you come to them.
Row 3: Knit 7, slip marker, purl to last 7 sts, slip marker, knit to end of row.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until hood measures about 11 inches, end
with WS row as the last row you work.
Work 3 additional inches in garter stitch. Bind off and sew the seam at the top of the hood.
Finishing:
Weave in ends.
