Brazilian Blowouts- Everything you Need to Know

Truth time. I have bad hair. Really bad. It’s SUPER poufy, frizzy and there’s a very tight wave pattern that starts at my scalp, extends for about 6 inches and then just stops. I spent my high school years wearing my hair in ponytail. Every. Single. Day. That is, until the kids in my school started referring to my ponytail as “the tumbleweed”. Then I reverted to a bun for the rest of my school experience. Ah, adolescence ?

I started getting Japanese Straightening done after I graduated but I was never 100% happy with it. It was permanent which was nice and it certainly looked better than my natural hair texture, but it made my hair so flat and limp. I had to curl it almost every day so it won’t look so lifeless. It also knotted like crazy!

Japanese Straightening is also about a 4-5 hours process. Spending all day in a salon chair is not my idea of fun! A few years ago at the advice of a stylist (who said the straightening was seriously damaging my hair), I decided to grow the Japanese Straightening out and get Brazilian Blowouts instead.

Brazilian Blowouts have been my hair’s saving grace! I want to share some info about them (if case anyone is thinking of getting it done) and let you guys know how they helped me say goodbye to “the tumbleweed” forever!

What is a Brazilian Blowout?
A Brazilian Blowout straightens and smooths hair without causing any damage to the follicle. It’s a keratin formula that bonds to each strand of hair, sealing the cuticle. Your hair will be frizz free, shiny and much easier to style.

How long does it take and how long does it last?
Brazilian Blowouts take about 90 minutes start to finish. You can wash your hair the same day. The blowout will last 3 months.

Will my hair be totally straight?
No. If you have curly hair, the Brazilian Blowout will loosen the curls, but your hair won’t be pin straight. If you have very wavy hair, your waves will relax considerably. Your hair will be much easier to style and it will dry a lot faster.
Can I get a Brazilian Blowout with color treated hair?
Yes, the blowout is perfect for damaged hair. It can be done on dyed hair as well as relaxed hair.

How much does it cost?
The salons around me (I live in NY) charge $200- $350+ for a Brazilian Blowout. I’m sure you can get it done significantly cheaper in other parts of the country.

How do you style your hair?
With the blowout, my hair takes about 10 minutes to blowdry(!) and then I curl the ends with a large barrel curling iron.
Anything else I should know?
Yes, you’ll need to use a sulfate-free shampoo every time you wash your hair. The sulfates in regular shampoos will strip the keratin out of your hair and your blowout will not last as long. No need to buy the $20 bottle of sulfate-free shampoo the salons sell. L’Oreal makes an inexpensive one.
