The Coziest Handmade Slippers
There’s something special about handmade slippers that store-bought versions just can’t replicate. When you knit your own slippers, you can choose yarns that feel soft and comfortable, adjust the fit to your liking, and create a design that suits your personal style.
These snow day slippers are especially cozy because they’re designed to keep your feet warm without feeling bulky. They’re perfect for wearing around the house on chilly mornings, relaxing evenings, or even lazy weekend days.

Choosing the Right Yarn for Slippers
The yarn you choose plays a big role in how your finished slippers will feel and wear over time. For this pattern, a durable yarn with a bit of structure works best so the slippers hold their shape.
Worsted or bulky weight yarn is often a great choice because it creates a thicker, warmer fabric. If you want extra durability, you can even hold two strands of yarn together while knitting.
Softness is also important, especially since these slippers will be worn directly against your skin. Look for yarns that are comfortable but still sturdy enough to withstand regular use.
If you enjoy experimenting with yarn weights and textures, you might also like my Easy Garter Tank Knitting Pattern and other beginner-friendly patterns that highlight different yarn choices.
Customizing Your Snow Day Slippers
One of the best things about this easy slippers knitting pattern is how easy it is to customize. Once you’ve made your first pair, you can start experimenting with different variations to create your own unique designs.
You can adjust the size to fit different foot lengths, making these slippers perfect for the whole family. Changing the yarn color is another simple way to personalize your slippers, whether you prefer neutral tones or something more colorful.
Adding details like buttons, cuffs, or contrasting edges can also give your slippers a more finished, decorative look. Once you understand the basic construction, the possibilities are endless.
Why Slippers Make the Perfect Handmade Gift
If you’re looking for a thoughtful and practical gift idea, handmade slippers are always a great choice. They’re cozy, useful, and feel extra special because they’re made by hand.
This snow day slippers knitting pattern is especially ideal for gift-giving because it’s quick enough to knit multiple pairs without feeling overwhelming. You can easily create a set for family members, friends, or even holiday gifts.

If you’re building a collection of go-to patterns, this one definitely deserves a spot.

I'm new to knitting so please excuse my question. Are these for babies?
No, these are for women 🙂
What I have done in the past is knit with the very fine sock elastic to keep them on and to knit the
higher like knee socks.
Mary when you worked these up like knee socks could you share how you did it? I would like to knit them for my daughter-in-law who is very cold natured. She bundles up at 40 degrees to go outside in NC. missbettie@gmail.com
Oops. I assumed they were for babies………. Of course, two skeins…….duh.
Allergic to wool. Thinking I can find yarn in same thickness and make these. YES?
Any super bulky yarn will do!
Use fine baby wool and fine needles to suit and away you go! A ribbon or fine elastic and they are perfect.
I'm just wondering if these would work as welly boot socks I will have a go and see xx
EASY PEASY!!!
Wow! I saw this pattern this morning, pulled out a pair of needles and my bulky chenille yarn. 3-hours later I have a pair of booties! And during that time I was doing laundry!
Thank you for the pattern. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone, Newbies and old hands.
Do you work with 2 strands of wool or just one?
Just one
Hi, I don't have any bulky yarn, but I have tons of worsted. Could I use 2 strands of worsted for these booties? This is the only pattern I have found that I can actually understand! Thanks so much.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that might work. I've doubled up 2 strands of worsted a substitute for bulky when using some of my hat patterns and they turned out fine.
It'll work I did 2 strands of worsted.
after I have done ribbing for 20 rows do I cut my yarn long for the tail end and thread it through the stiches and then take them off my needle? Carole
Hi Carole- yes, that's correct.
Thank you much. I have been looking all over for this pattern and am so glad you posted it.
