Bumble Bee Hat Knitting Pattern

My little guy has been obsessed with insects lately. When I asked him what kind of hat I should knit him, his answer was (of course) “Bugs!”…so here it is, the Bumble Bee Hat Knitting Pattern! I wanted to make an insect themed hat that was still cute, so I thought a bumble bee would be perfect. Plus, with Spring just around the corner it felt appropriate.

This hat features wide stripes and a rolled brim. The antenna are knit separately and then stitched on.

Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Lemon and in Black

Needles: Size US 9 circular, 16 inch, Size US 7 single point

Gauge: 2 inches = 12 sts.

Size: Child’s size 2-5 years old

Bumble Bee Hat Knitting Pattern

With the black yarn cast on 68 sts.  Join together and insert a marker to indicate the beginning of the row. Knit in the round for 5 rows. Switch to yellow and knit another 5 rows. Work in this pattern until hat measures 6 1/2 (7 inches for 4-5 years old) inches.

Row 1: Knit 6 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Row 2: Knit 5 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Row 3: Knit 4 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Row 4: Knit 3 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Row 5: Knit 2 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Row 6: Knit 1 sts, knit 2 together across row.
Knit 2 sts. together until you are left with 6 sts. Break yarn and pull through remaining sts. Pull to tighten. Weave in ends.

To make the antenna:

With the single point needles, cast on 6 sts. Work in Stockinette Stitch until piece measures 3 1/2 inches. Roll up and stitch closed. Stitch on to the top of the hat.
