Yarn: Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes in Java (2 skeins) #4 worsted weight yarn
    Hook: US I crochet hook
Gauge: gauge not necessary for this project
Finished length (excluding fringe): approximately 75 inches

    Pattern Notes

The scarf is made by crocheting multiple granny squares individually before sewing them together into long strips. Once assembled, a simple half-double crochet edging finishes both long sides, giving the scarf a polished look while helping the edges lay flat.

Finally, long fringe is added to each end for extra texture and movement.

Because the project is built from small motifs, it’s easy to customize the length. Simply crochet additional granny squares if you’d like an oversized scarf or fewer squares for a shorter accessory.

    Helpful Tips for Success

Weave in Ends as You Go

Granny square projects create quite a few yarn tails. Instead of saving them until the end, weave them in after completing each square. You’ll thank yourself later.

    Block Before Joining

Light blocking helps every square become exactly the same size. This makes sewing much easier and gives the finished scarf a professional appearance.

    Keep Your Tension Consistent

Since each square is made separately, try to maintain even tension throughout the project so every motif finishes the same size.

    Join Carefully

Take your time sewing the squares together. Matching each corner and stitch creates nearly invisible seams and gives your scarf a polished finish.

Frequently Asked Questions about Granny Square Scarf Crochet Pattern

Is this granny square scarf beginner friendly?

Yes. If you know how to chain, double crochet, slip stitch, and sew pieces together, you’ll have no trouble completing this project. The individual granny squares are repetitive and easy to memorize, making it a relaxing crochet pattern for beginners.

How long does it take to crochet?

Most crocheters can finish this scarf over a weekend, although your speed will depend on experience and how quickly you complete each granny square.

    Can I make it longer?

Absolutely. Simply crochet additional granny squares before assembling the scarf.

    What yarn works best?

Any #4 worsted weight yarn works well. Acrylic is affordable and easy to care for, while wool provides extra warmth for winter.

Do I have to add fringe?

No. The fringe is completely optional. The scarf looks beautiful with or without it.

Can I wash the finished scarf?

Follow the care instructions for your chosen yarn. Most acrylic yarns are machine washable, while wool blends often require gentle hand washing.

Is this a good stash-busting project?

Definitely. Granny square projects are one of the best ways to use leftover yarn from previous crochet projects.

Can I use different colors for every square?

Yes! Mixing colors gives the scarf a fun patchwork look and is a great way to create a one-of-a-kind accessory.
