Why You’ll Love This Cat Bed Knitting Pattern

There are plenty of reasons why knitters love making pet projects, and this cat bed is no exception.

Some of the best features include:

Beginner-friendly construction
Quick project using bulky yarn
Knit flat with simple stitches
Comfortable and cozy for cats
Great handmade gift idea
Customizable size and colors
Durable enough for everyday use

Unlike many pet bed patterns that require complicated shaping or advanced techniques, this cat bed uses straightforward knitting methods that are approachable for knitters of all skill levels.

The finished bed provides a warm, inviting space where cats can lounge, nap, and feel secure.

Why Cats Love Cozy Beds

Cats spend a large portion of their day sleeping. In fact, most cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours every day. Having a dedicated sleeping space helps them feel comfortable and secure. Cats naturally gravitate toward warm, enclosed areas where they can relax undisturbed.

A knitted cat bed offers several benefits:

Soft cushioning
Warm insulation
Familiar scent retention
Comfortable nesting shape
Lightweight and portable design

Because the bed is made from yarn, it gradually absorbs your cat’s scent, helping it become a favorite resting place over time.

A Perfect Beginner Knitting Project

If you’re still building your knitting skills, this pattern is an excellent project to tackle.

You’ll practice:

Knit stitches
Purl stitches
Basic increases
Basic decreases
Seaming techniques

The simple construction means you can focus on enjoying the process rather than worrying about complicated shaping.

If you’ve successfully knitted a scarf or blanket, you can absolutely make this cat bed.

    Pattern instructions:

    Cast on 40 sts.
Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1 across row.
Row 2: Purl 1, Knit 1 across row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 14 1/2 inches from the cast on edge. Bind off in ribbing.

    How to finish:

Fold over and sew seam. Weave in ends.

Thread and yarn needle and weave in and out to gather the fabric.

Pull the yarn to tighten, cinching the bottom completely closed.

This is what the piece should look like with the end cinched.

Fold the edge over (almost to the bottom). This doubled up the sides and helps the bed keep its shape. Weave in ends.

What Yarn Works Best for a Knit Cat Bed?

Because this bed will receive regular use, choosing the right yarn matters.

    For best results, look for:

    Jumbo or Super Bulky Yarn

    Thicker yarn creates:

    Extra cushioning
    Faster knitting
    Better structure
    Improved durability

    Acrylic Yarn

Acrylic yarn is often ideal because it:

    Is easy to clean
    Holds its shape well
    Comes in many colors
    Is budget-friendly

    Wool Blends

If you want a luxurious bed, wool blends offer excellent warmth and softness.

However, keep in mind that some cats shed heavily, so washable yarns are often the most practical choice.

Choosing Colors for Your Cat Bed

One of the most enjoyable parts of this project is selecting colors.

    Popular options include:

    Soft gray
    Cream
    Taupe
    Charcoal
    Sage green
    Dusty blue
    Terracotta
    Oatmeal

Neutral shades blend beautifully with most home décor styles.

You can also match the bed to your cat’s fur color for a coordinated look.

    For example:

Gray cats look beautiful against cream beds.
Orange cats stand out against charcoal.
Black cats look striking on lighter neutral colors.

    Customize the Size

Every cat has different sleeping preferences.

Some love stretching out, while others prefer curling into a tight ball.

This pattern can easily be adjusted by:

    Adding extra rounds
    Increasing the base diameter
    Creating taller sides
    Using thicker yarn

You can even make a larger version for multiple cats who enjoy sleeping together.

    Great for Cat Lovers

Handmade gifts are always special, and cat owners appreciate gifts that include their pets.

This knit cat bed makes a wonderful gift for:

    New pet owner
    Cat rescue volunteers
    Animal lovers
    Veterinary staff
    Pet sitters

Pair it with a few cat toys or treats for an adorable gift basket.

    Add Extra Comfort

Want to make the bed even cozier?

    Try adding:

    A removable fleece liner
    A small cushion insert
    Faux fur trim
    A folded knit blanket

Many cats love beds that combine multiple soft textures.
