FAQs About Flat Knit Men’s Beanies
Can I really knit a beanie without circular needles?
Yes, you can absolutely knit a beanie without circular needles. This pattern is specifically designed to be worked flat on straight needles, making it a great option for beginners or anyone who prefers a simpler setup. Instead of knitting in the round, you’ll create a flat piece and then seam it together at the end. Once finished, the seam is barely noticeable—especially if you use mattress stitch—so the hat still looks clean and professional.
Is this pattern beginner-friendly?
This men’s basic beanie knitting pattern is very beginner-friendly. It uses only fundamental stitches like knit and purl, along with simple decreases to shape the crown. If you can knit a rectangle and follow a basic pattern, you can make this hat. It’s also a great first “wearable” project because it teaches you how to go from a flat piece to a finished item.
What yarn works best for a men’s beanie?
Worsted weight yarn is ideal for this pattern because it’s easy to work with and creates a warm, structured fabric. Wool or wool blends are great for colder weather, while acrylic yarn is a practical choice if you want something machine washable. Choosing a soft yarn will make the hat more comfortable to wear, especially for everyday use.
How do I get the right fit?
Fit is determined by both your gauge and your cast-on stitch count. Always check your gauge before starting, as even small differences can affect the size. The ribbed brim adds flexibility, allowing the hat to stretch and fit comfortably on most adult head sizes. If you want a looser or tighter fit, you can adjust your needle size slightly.
How do I seam the hat neatly?
After knitting, fold the hat in half lengthwise with the right sides facing out. Use mattress stitch for the cleanest, most invisible seam. This technique lines up the edges smoothly and creates a professional finish that blends into the fabric. Taking a few extra minutes on the seam can make a big difference in the final look of your beanie.

directions for the actual beginning and end would be helpful. i've mostly just read gibberish…that's how new/beginner I am. Does the pattern seal itself up or do i have to do that for the crown part?
The cast on part at the beginning is the bottom of the hat. The hat is knit flat and then when you are done, you hand sew the seam starting at the crown. I hope this helps!
What does Dec row and tog mean?
Dec row- is a row where the stitches are decreased. Tog is an abbreviation in knitting for together. Hope this helps!
What is the weight of this yarn (worsted, bulky)? Can you suggest alternative yarns?
The yarn is bulky weight. Lion Brand Wool Spun is a nice alternative http://www.michaels.com/lions-pride-woolspun/M10378458.html?dwvar_M10378458_color=Aquamarine
Can this pattern be worked in the round as written?
Yes, it can 🙂
What yarn thickness was uses?
I used a bulky weight yarn
Is there a video of this available??
Took me 7 years to finish a pullover for my husband! Hopefully he won't need to wait that long for a woolly hat this Winter 🙂 Thanks for great, easy pattern.
Just finished up one of these. Really simple and quick. Thanks so much for sharing. I used the self striping charisma yarn so it's actually striped in three colours. On row 40 I had an extra stitch. Don't know what I did wrong but I just knit it and carried on.
Thank you for this pattern as I am knitting this for the homeless and refugees and it is quick and easy even with my arthritic hands thank you so much
