Kids Candy Corn Hat Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Loops & Threads Impeccable in Gold, Pumpkin and Cloud
Needles: Sizes US 5 (3.75 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) straight knitting needles
Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch
Sizes: ages 4 (6, 8, 10)

Pattern instructions:
With smaller needles and the gold yarn, cast on 94 (98-98-102) sts.
Row 1: (right side). *K2. P2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
Row 2: *P2. K2. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P2.

Repeat the last 2 rows (K2. P2) ribbing for 1 1/2 inches, ending on a 2nd row and dec 3 (1-1- 1) st(s) evenly across last row. 91 (97-97-101) sts.

Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking stitch until the hat from beginning measures 2 1/2 (2 1/2- 3- 3) inches. Break the gold yarn and begin working with the pumpkin.

Proceed in stocking stitch until the hat from beginning measures 5 1/2 (5 1/2 -6 -6 1/2) inches. Break the pumpkin yarn and begin working with the white.

Proceed in stocking stitch until the hat from beginning measures 6 (6 1/2-7-7 1/4) inches, ending on a purl row.

Shape the Crown:
Row 1: *K7 (10-10-23). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 81 (89-89-97) sts. 
Row 2nd and alternate rows: Purl.
Row 3: *K8 (9-9-10). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 73 (81-81-89) sts.
Row 5: *K7 (8-8-9). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 65 (73-73-81) sts.
Row 7: *K6 (7-7-8). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 57 (65-65-73) sts.
Row 9: *K5 (6-6-7). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 49 (57-57-65) sts.
Row 11: *K4 (5-5-6). K2tog. Rep from *to last st. K1. 41 (49-49-57) sts.
Row 13: *K3 (4-4-5). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 33 (41-41-49) sts.
Row 15: *K2 (3-3-4). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. 25 (33-33-41) sts.

Sizes 6, 8 and 10 only:
Row 18: Purl.
Row 19: *K(1-1-2). K2tog. Rep from * to last st. K1. (17-17-25) sts.

Size 10 only:
Row 20: Purl.

All Sizes: Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread the end through remaining stitches, pull tightly and secure. Sew center back seam. Make and attach pompom to top of the hat.
