How to Make Focaccia Bread

How to Make Focaccia Bread

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus extra for greasing and drizzling
  • Toppings of your choice (I used cherry tomatoes, thyme and asparagus)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.

2. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a little more flour.

4. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

5. Shape the dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air bubbles. Transfer it to a lightly greased baking sheet and gently stretch it out to fit the pan. You can shape it into a rectangle or a round shape, depending on your preference.

6. Second rise: Cover the shaped dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until it puffs up slightly.

7. Preheat the oven: While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 400°F

8. Add toppings: Once the dough has finished its second rise, use your fingers to make dimples all over the surface. Drizzle the top with olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite toppings, such as cherry tomatoes, olives, rosemary, or garlic.

9. Bake: Place the focaccia in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until it’s golden brown.

Serve and enjoy: Remove the focaccia from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing. Serve it warm or at room temperature, and enjoy it on its own or paired with your favorite dips and spreads.
