Kids Nordic Reindeer Knitting Pattern- a classic Nordic design featuring reindeer and evergreen trees.
I’ve been having a lot of fun lately knitting Nordic hats for the whole family. I’m looking forward to sharing the patterns with you! First up is this reindeer and evergreen tree hat I made for my youngest. This pattern slightly more difficult than the ones I usually post, so I wouldn’t recommend it for those who are new to knitting.
Kids Nordic Reindeer Knitting Pattern
Yarn: Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Ivy and in Ecru
(1 skein each)
Needles: Size US 6 circular, 16-inch and size US 8 circular, 16-inch, Size US 8 double point needles
Gauge: 10 sts = 2 inches
Size: Kids 2-4 years old.
With the smaller needles, cast on 84 sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 1/2 inches.
Switch to larger needles and knit 1 round.
Knit for 2 more rounds alternating colors each stitch (green, white, green white, etc). Start with green.
Knit for 18 rows following the knitting chart below. (click on the image to enlarge)
Once finished with the pattern, knit for 2 more rounds alternating colors each stitch (green, white, green white, etc). Start with green.
Shape crown:
Switch to double point needles when needed
Row 1: *K12. K2tog. Rep from * around. (78 sts)
Row 2: *K12. K2tog. Rep from * around. (72 sts)
Row 3: *K10. K2tog. Rep from * around (66 sts)
Row 4: *K9. K2tog. Rep from * around (60 sts)
Row 5: *K8. K2tog. Rep from * around (54 sts)
Row 6: *K6 (7-8-9). K2tog. Rep from * (48 sts)
Row 7: *K5 (6-7-8). K2tog. Rep from * around (42 sts)
Row 8: *K4 (5-6-7). K2tog. Rep from * around (36 sts)
Row 9: *K3 (4-5-6). K2tog. Rep from * around. (30 sts)
Row 10: *K2 (3-4-5). K2tog. Rep from * around. (24 sts)
Row 11: *K1 (2-3-4). K2tog. Rep from *around. (18 sts)
Row 12: *K1 (2-3) K2tog. Rep from * around. (12 sts)
Row 13: Knit 2 tog across round.
Break yarn, pull through remaining stitches and pull to tighten. Weave in ends. Make and attach pom pom.
