6 Unique Knitting Stitches Using Knit and Purl

Knit and purl are the basic stitches you learn when you first start knitting.  Stockinette and Garter stitches make up the majority of beginner knitting patterns. They’re great, but after a while, you might grow tired of knitting the same stitches.

These 6 stitches are all created using knit and purl. They look intricate, but every stitch is simple enough for a beginner to do. These stitches are an easy way to upgrade your next scarf, throw or pillow knitting project!

And now, without further ado, check out 6 Unique Knitting Stitches Using Knit and Purl:

Drop Stitch

The Drop Stitch looks complicated, but it couldn’t be easier to make!

The Drop Stitch is created by knitting the first stitch in a row and then yarn over (YO) twice. You continue in this manner (knit 1 stitch, yarn over twice) across the row. On the second row, you knit the knit stitches and drop the extra wraps between each knit stitch. The end result is a pretty, lacy knit that’s ideal for spring!

Woven Stitch

The Woven Stitch is worked over an uneven number of stitches. It creates a diagonal, woven texture that looks great on scarves and blankets.

Triangle Stitch

The Triangle Stitch Pattern is created by casting on multiples of 12 stitches. The pattern consists of 12 rows with alternating knit and purl stitches.

Hurdle Stitch

The Hurdle Stitch is easy and fun to knit. It’s reversible which means that both sides are the same. It’s great for throws and scarves. It’s also a stitch that works well with jumbo yarn.

Zig Zag Stitch

Would you believe this lacey zig zag pattern is actually pretty easy to create??? The pattern is created by using knit and purl stitches. Two types of decrease stitches are used- knit/purl 2 together (K2TOG, P2TOG) and Slip Slip Knit/Purl (SSK, SSP). SSK and SSP create a slant that mirrors knit/purl 2 together.

This lacey zig zag pattern looks great on scarves and throws.
