Thick and Quick Hat Knitting Pattern- an easy project in the prettiest self-striping yarn.
Yay- I finally got around to making a hat for myself! I knit for the kids so much that I often leave myself out! The weather has really started to cool off so I wanted to create a knitting pattern for the perfect wear-with-everything hat. This Thick and Quick Hat Knitting Pattern is a fast project that’s suitable for beginners (as long as you’re comfortable using circular and double point needles).
For this pattern, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn. Thick & Quick is one of my favorites and I’ve used it countless times for my free knitting patterns. Anyone who knits knows that it’s a time-consuming hobby, so being able to whip up a hat in an evening using Thick & Quick is pretty gratifying!
This hat features a very wide, ribbed brim and a slouchy shape. I kept the design simple so the focus would be on this pretty, self-striping yarn.
The finishing touch is a big, fluffy pom. I always use a pom pom maker. I bought one years ago and I never made another pom pom without it! Beginner Thick and Quick Hat Knitting Pattern
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Coney Island (1 skein), Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Pumpkin (for the pom pom)
Needles: Size US 11 circular, 16 inch, Size US 11 Double Point knitting needles
Also needed: Pom pom maker, Yarn needle with large eye
Gauge: 2 inches= 5 sts in stockinette stitch
Size: Women’s One Size
With the circular needles, cast on 48 sts. Join ends together and place a marker.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 4 1/2 inches.
Knit in the round until piece measures 8 1/2 inches from the cast-on edge.
Shape crown:
Switch to double point knitting needles when needed.
Round 1: Knit 6, Knit 2 together across round. (42 sts)
Round 2: Knit across round.
Round 3: Knit 5, Knit 2 together across round. (36 sts)
Round 4: Knit across round.
Round 5: Knit 4, Knit 2 together across round. (30 sts)
Round 6: Knit across round.
Round 7: Knit 3, Knit 2 together across round. (24 sts)
Round 8: Knit across round.
Round 9: Knit 2, Knit 2 together across round. (18 sts)
Round 10: Knit across round.
Round 11: Knit 2 together across round. (9 sts)
Break yarn, pull through remaining stitches. Pull to tighten. Weave in ends. Make and attach pom using pom pom maker.
