Easy Flat Knit Mittens for Kids

Yarn: Lion Brand Heartland in Olympic
Needles: Size US 6 single point knitting needles and Size US 7 single point knitting needles
Gauge: 19 sts and 25 rows = 4 inches with larger needles in Stockinette Stitch
Age: 3-4 years old
Pattern instructions:
For the Right Mitten:
**With smaller needles, cast on 27 sts.
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 inches, ending on a wrong side row.
Change to larger needles and knit 1 row decreasing 1 stitch in the middle. Work 3 rows even in stocking stitch (26 sts)**
For the Thumb Gusset:
Row 1: (right side) K15. (Kfb) twice. Knit to end of row.
Row 2: Purl across.
Row 3: K15. Kfb. K2. Kfb. Knit to end of row.
Row 4: Purl across.
Row 5: Knit 15. Kfb. K4. Kfb. Knit to end of row. 32 sts.
Row 6: Purl across.
Next row: (RS). K23. Turn. Cast on 2 sts. Slip rem sts onto st holder.
***Thumb: Next row: P10. Turn. Leave the remaining stitches on the stitch holder.
Continue in stocking st on these 10 sts until the Thumb from cast on row measures 1 inch, ending on a purl row.
Next row: (right side). *K2tog. Rep from * to end of row. (5 sts). Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem 5 sts. Pull to tighten and sew the thumb seam.
With right sides facing, join yarn to remaining stitches on stitch holder and knit to end of row.
Next row: Purl, picking up 2 sts purlwise at base of Thumb. (26 sts)
Continue even until work after ribbing measures 3 1/2 inches, ending on a purl row.
Shape the Top of the Mitten:
Row 1: (RS). K1. [K1. ssk. K6. K2tog. K1] twice. K1. (22 sts)
Row 2 and alternate rows: Purl across.
Row 3: K1. [K1. ssk. K4. K2tog. K1] twice. K1. (18 sts)
Row 5: K1. [K1. ssk. K2. K2tog. K1] twice. K1. (14 sts)
Graft 2 sets of 7 sts tog. Sew side seam.***
For the Left Mitten:
LEFT MITTEN
Work from ** to ** as given for Right Mitten.
Shape thumb gusset:
Row 1: K9. (Kfb) twice. Knit to end of row.
Row 2 and alternate rows: Purl across.
Row 3: K9. Kfb. K2. Kfb. Knit to the end of the row.
Row 5: K9. Kfb. K4. Kfb. Knit to end of row. (32 sts)
Row 6: Purl across.
Next row: (RS). K17. Turn. Cast on 2 sts. Slip remaining sts onto st holder.
Work from *** to *** as given for Right Mitten.
