Pattern Instructions:
(make 42 pumpkin granny squares)
For the Granny Square:

Round 1: Magic ring, Ch 2, 10dc into magic ring, join to first dc
Round 2: Ch 2, 2dc into each st around, join to first dc
Round 3: Ch 2, *dc, hdc into next 2 st, dc, [2dc, ch 2, 2dc] all in one st, repeat from * , join to first dc (8 st per side)
Round 4: Ch 2, *dc until you get to the ch 2 space from previous row, [2dc, ch 2, 2dc] all in ch 2 space, repeat from * , dc in next 2 spaces until you get to the beginning of the round, join to first dc (12 st per side)
Round 5: Ch 2, *dc until you get to the ch 2 space from previous row, [2dc, ch 2, 2dc] all in chain 2 space, repeat from * , dc in next 4 spaces until you get to the beginning of the round, join to first dc (16 st per side)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

For the Pumpkin Appliqué:

Round 1: Magic ring, Ch 2, 10dc into magic ring, join to first dc
Round 2: Ch 2, 2dc into each st around, join to first dc
Round 3: Ch 2, 2dc into each st around, join to first dc
Fasten off.

Finishing:

Place the appliqué on top of the granny square. Make sure it is centered and sew it in place. With green yarn, insert your crochet hook through a stitch at the top of the pumpkin. Chain 6 sts and fasten off. Fold the chain over to create a stem and sew in place. Weave in ends.

Border:

Once all of the granny squares have been joined, add a simple crochet border to give the blanket a neat, finished look. This border consists of one round of single crochet, one round of double crochet, and a final round of single crochet.

Round 1 – Single Crochet

Join yarn with a slip stitch at any corner of the blanket.
Ch 1.
Work 1 sc evenly around the entire blanket, making sure the stitches are spaced evenly along each side.
At each corner, work 3 sc in the corner stitch or space. This will help the border turn the corner without pulling.
Join to the first sc with a sl st.

Round 2 – Double Crochet

Sl st into the corner ch-2 space.Ch 3 (counts as first dc).
Work 1 dc in the same corner space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space.Work 1 dc in each sc across.At each corner ch-2 space, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).
Repeat around the entire blanket.
Join to the top of the beginning ch-3 with a sl st.

Round 3 – Single Crochet

Ch 1.
Work 1 sc in each dc around.
At each corner, work 3 sc in the center corner stitch.
Continue around the entire blanket.
Join to the first sc with a sl st.
Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends.

Tip: Keep your stitches relaxed as you crochet the border. If the edges begin to ripple, you may be adding too many stitches. If the edges pull inward or the corners curl, add a few more stitches along the sides or at the corners.

Joining Granny Squares with Single Crochet

Line up the corners and stitches along both edges.

Join your yarn and chain 1.
Insert the hook through the next matching stitches on both squares.
Yarn over and pull the yarn through both squares.Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook to make a single crochet.
Continue working single crochet stitches across the entire edge.
Keep your tension relaxed and even so the squares don’t bunch or pucker.
Continue joining the squares together until you have completed each row.
Once the individual rows are finished, join the rows together using the same single crochet method.
Weave in all loose yarn ends when the blanket is completely assembled.

Tip: If you want the raised single crochet seam to show on the right side of the blanket, place the squares with the wrong sides together while joining. This makes the join part of the finished design and adds extra texture between the granny squares.
