Chunky Knit Christmas Stocking Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Easy Thick & Quick Yarn in Grass and Oatmeal (#6 super bulky yarn) 1 skein of each
Needles: Double pointed knitting needles size 13 (9 mm), set of 4
Gauge: 10 sts + 16 rounds = about 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Size: approximately 22 inches long
Note: Stocking is worked in rounds of stockinette stitch on double pointed needles. Yarn color is changed following Stripe Sequence. When working Stripe Sequence, do not cut old yarn color, carry color not in use carefully up inside of piece.
Stripe Sequence:
Work * 4 rows with oatmeal, 4 rows with green; rep from * for Stripe Sequence.
Pattern instructions:
With double pointed needles and the green yarn, cast on 30 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles, placing 8 sts on first needle, 14 sts on 2nd needle, and 8 sts on 3rd needle. Place marker for beg of round.
Work in K2, p1 Rib for 16 rnds. Change to oatmeal yarn.
Work in stockinette st worked in rounds (knit every round) for 38 rounds (9 1/2 stripes), changing yarn color following Stripe Sequence.
Heel Flap
Notes:
Heel is worked in rows with green yarn only. Heel flap and heel turn will be worked over the 14 sts on 2nd needle only. Do not remove beginning of round marker.
Row 1 (RS): K8, (sl 1, k1) 7 times, TURN; leave sts on 3rd needle unworked.
Row 2: Working across the 14 sts on 2nd needle only, sl 1, p13, TURN.
Row 3: (Sl 1, k1) 7 times, TURN.
Row 4: Sl 1, p13, TURN.
Rows 5-10: Rep Rows 3 and 4 for 3 more times.
Shape the Heel:
Row 11: Sl 1, k7, k2tog, k1, TURN; leave last 3 sts unworked (10 sts)
Row 12: Sl 1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn; leave last 3 sts unworked (6 sts)
Row 13: Sl 1, k4, k2tog, k1, turn; leave last st unworked (7 sts)
Row 14: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn; leave last st unworked (8 sts)
Row 15: Sl 1, k6, k2tog, turn (8 sts)
Row 16: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, turn – 8 sts remain on 2nd needle.
For the Foot:
Note: now you’ll return to working in rounds to shape the foot.
Continuing with the green yarn, k8 sts from 2nd needle, pick up and k6 sts evenly spaced along side edge of heel, k8 sts from 3rd needle – to bring you back to the beg of rnd marker.
Round 1: K8 sts from first needle; with next needle, pick up and k6 sts evenly spaced along side edge of heel, k14 sts from 2nd needle, pick up and k6 sts evenly spaced along next side edge of heel; with 3rd needle, k to end of rnd – 36 sts (8 sts on first needle, 20 sts on 2nd needle, 8 sts on 3rd needle).
Change to oatmeal.
Round 2:
Needle #1: Knit
Needle #2: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog,k1 – 18 sts on 2nd needle.
Needle #3: Knit.
Round 3: Knit.
Rounds 4 and 5: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3–you’ll have 16 sts on 2nd needle at the end of Round 4. Change to green yarn.
Round 6: Rep Rnd 2 – 30 sts (8 sts on first needle, 14 sts on 2nd needle, 8 sts on 3rd needle).
For the Toe:
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2:
Needle #1: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 7 stson first needle.
Needle #2: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog,k1 – 12 sts on 2nd needle.
Needle #3: K1, k2tog, k to end of needle – 7sts on 3rd needle.
Repeat Round 2 until 10 sts remain (3 sts on first needle, 4 sts on 2nd needle, 3 sts on 3rd needle).
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle and then through remaining sts. Pull tail to close opening at tip of toe and knot.
