How to make a Half Double Crochet
The half double crochet (abbreviated as hdc) is a versatile stitch that falls between a single and double crochet in height. Here’s how to make it:
Steps:
- Make a Slipknot and Chain
Start by making a slipknot and chain the desired number of stitches (usually indicated by your pattern). - Yarn Over (yo)
Wrap the yarn over your hook once before inserting it into the stitch. - Insert the Hook
Skip the first chain from the hook (this is your turning chain). Insert your hook into the second chain or into the stitch you want to work into. - Yarn Over Again
Yarn over the hook again. - Pull Through the Stitch
Pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have 3 loops on your hook. - Yarn Over and Pull Through All Loops
Yarn over one more time and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. This completes your half double crochet stitch! - Repeat
Continue yarning over, inserting the hook into the next stitch, yarning over again, pulling through, and finishing with one more yarn over through all loops. - Next Row
When you reach the end of the row, chain 1 or 2 (depending on your pattern) and turn your work. Continue stitching hdc across the next row.
The half double crochet creates a nice, medium-height stitch that’s great for adding texture and warmth to your projects!
