Beginner Tank Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Comfy Cotton (2 skeins)
Needles: Size US 7 single point knitting needles, size US 7 16-inch circular needles
Gauge: 19 sts and 25 rows = 4″
Sizes: women’s S/M, M/L, L/XL
Size S/M measures 38 inches across the bust and 22 inches from the top of the shoulder to the hem

Pattern instructions:
Make 2- front and back are the same.

Cast on 86 (96, 108) sts,
Work 5 rows in K1, P1 ribbing, ending on a purl side row.

Work in stockinette stitch until work from beginning measures 6 1/2 inches ending on a purl row.

Shape sides:
Decrease 1 st each end of row on next and every following 20th (20th-16th) row 2 (2-3) times more. 80 (90-100) sts.

Continue working in stockinette stitch until work from beginning measures 15 inches ending on a purl side row.

Shape armholes:
Cast off 4 (5-5) sts the beginning the next 2 rows. 72 (80-90) sts.
Row 1: (right side). K1. K2tog. Knit to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.
Row 2: P1. P2togtbl. Purl to last 3 sts. P2tog. P1.
Rep last 2 rows 2 (3-4) times more. 60 (64-70) sts.

Next row: (RS). K1. K2tog. Knit to last 3 sts. ssk. K1.
Next row: Purl across.
Rep last 2 rows 4 (3-4) times more. 50 (56-60) sts.

Work even in stockinette stitch until armhole measures 3 1⁄2 (3 1⁄2-4) inches ending on a purl row.

Shape the neck:

Row 1: (right side). K15 (15-17). K2tog. K1. Turn. Leave the remaining sts on a st holder. 
Row 2: P1. P2tog. Purl to end of row.
Row 3: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
Rows 4 & 5: As 2nd and 3rd rows.
Row 6: Purl across.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more. 10 (10-12) sts.

Work even until armhole measures 7 (7-7 1/2) inches, ending on a purl row. Cast off.

With the right side facing, slip next 14 (20-20) sts onto a st holder. Join the yarn to remaining stitches and proceed as follows:

Row 1: (RS). K1. ssk. Knit to end of row.
Row 2: Purl to last 3 sts. P2tog. P1.
Row 3 and Row 4: As 1st and 2nd rows.
Row 5: As 1st row.
Row 6: Purl.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times more. 10 (10-12) sts.

Work even until the armhole measures 7 (7-7 1/2) inches, ending on a purl row. Cast off.

Sew the front and back together at the shoulder and side seams.

Neck Edging: 
With RS facing, and the circular needles pick up and knit 21 sts down left front neck edge. K14 (20-20) from front st holder, dec 1 st at center. Pick up and knit 42 sts up right front and down right back neck edge. K14 (20-20) from back st holder, dec 1 st at center. Pick up and knit 21 sts up left back neck edge. 110 (122-122) sts.

K1, P1 for 3 rows.
Cast off in ribbing. Weave in ends.
