Flat Knit Irish Moss Stitch Mittens

Yarn: Lion Brand Heartland in Dry Tortugas
Needles: Size US 6 single point knitting needles
Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches
Size: Women’s one size

Pattern instructions:
Right mitten: **Cast on 39 sts.
Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 3 inches, ending on a wrong side row.
Work in pattern as follows:
Row 1: (RS). P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Row 3: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Row 4: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
These 4 rows make the Irish moss pattern.
Work 2 more rows in pattern.

Shape Thumb Gusset:
Row 1: (RS). Work in pattern across 20 sts. Place marker. (Kfb) twice. Place marker. Work in pattern to the end of the row. (41 sts)
Rows 2 and 4: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 3: Pat across 20 sts. Kfb. K2. Kfb. Pat to end of row. (43 sts)
Row 5: Pat across 20 sts. Kfb. K4. Kfb. Work in pattern to the end of the row. (45 sts)
Row 6: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 7: Work in pattern across 20 sts. Kfb. K6. Kfb. Work in pattern to the end of row. (47 sts)
Row 8: Work even in pattern, purling the thumb sts between markers.
Row 9: Work in pattern across 20 sts. Kfb. K8. Kfb. Work in pattern to the end of the row. (49 sts)
Row 10: Work even in pat, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 11: Work in pattern across 22 sts. Kfb. K10. Kfb. Work in pattern to the end of the row. (51 sts)
Row 12: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.

Next row: (RS). Work in pattern across 34 sts. Turn. Cast on 2 sts. Slip remaining sts onto st holder.

For the thumb:
Next row: P16. Turn. Leave remaining sts on st holder.
Continue in stockinette st on these 16 sts until Thumb from cast on row measures 2 inches, ending on a purl row.

Next row: (RS). *K2tog. Rep from * to end of row. (8 sts) Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through remaining sts. Pull to tighten and fasten securely. Sew Thumb seam.

With RS facing, join yarn to remaining sts on st holder and work in pattern to the end of row.
Next row: Work in pattern, picking up 2 sts purlwise at base of Thumb. (39 sts) Continue in pattern until work after ribbing measures approximately 7 1/2 inches ending on a 2nd row of Irish Moss Stitch Pattern.

Shape the top of mitten:
Row 1: (RS). K1. *P3tog. K1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. P1. K1. (21 sts) 
Row 2: *P1. K1. Rep from * to last st. P1. 
Row 3: P1. *K3tog. P1. Rep from * (11 sts) Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through remaining sts. Pull to tighten and fasten securely. Sew side seam.***

LEFT MITTEN
Work from ** to ** as given for Right Mitten.
Shape thumb gusset:
Row 1: (RS). Work in pattern across 17 sts. Place marker. (Kfb) twice. Place marker. Work in pattern to the end of the row. (41 sts)
Rows 2 and 4: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 3: Pat across 17 sts. Kfb. K2. Kfb. Pattern to the end of the row. (43 sts). 
Row 5: Pat across 17 sts. Kfb. K4. Kfb. Pattern to the end of the row. (45 sts)
Row 6: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 7: Work in pattern across 17 sts. Kfb. K6. Kfb. Pat to end of row. (47 sts)
Row 8: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 9: Pat across 17 sts. Kfb. K8. Kfb. Pat to end of row. (49 sts)
Row 10: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.
Row 11: Work in pattern across 17 sts. Kfb. K10. Kfb. Pattern to end of row. (51 sts).
Row 12: Work even in pattern, purling thumb sts between markers.

Next row: (RS). Work in pattern across 31 sts. Turn. Cast on 2 sts. Slip remaining sts onto st holder.
