Colorwork Fox Hat Knitting Pattern- a fun, Autumn-themed topper for kids, featuring a round of foxes.
These foxes are created using a technique called colorwork (or stranded) knitting. Stranded knitting involves using two colors of yarn to create a pattern. The strands that aren’t being used are carried across the back of the work (called “floats”). Since the fox design is simple, this is an ideal pattern for knitters who are new to colorwork.

Colorwork Fox Hat Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Terracotta and in Linen (acrylic worsted yarn, 1 skein of #4 weight yarn needed in each color)
Knitting needles: Size US size 7 circular, 16-inch, Size US size 8 circular, 16-inch, size US 8 double point knitting needles
Gauge: 2 inches= 8 sts
Size: kids age 3-7 years
Pattern instructions:
With the smaller circular needles and the main color yarn, cast on 80 stitches. Join ends together and place a stitch marker. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for approximately 1 1/2 inches.
Beginning in the lower right corner of the knitting chart, knit every round and change yarn color following Chart until all 25 rounds of the chart have been completed.
After completing the chart, Knit 2 rounds.
Next, Knit 1 round decreasing 3 stitches evenly (77 sts).
Shape the crown:
Switch to dpn needles when needed.
Round 1: K3, *k2tog, k5; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2 (66 sts)
Round 2: K2, *k2tog, k4; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2 (55 sts)
Round 3: K2, *k2tog, k3; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (44 sts)
Round 4: K1, *k2tog, k2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (33 sts)
Round 5: K1, *k2tog, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2tog (22 sts)
Round 6: Knit 2 together to the end of the round.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull to tighten. Secure and weave in the ends. Make and attach pom pom.
