How to Crochet a Leaf
How to Crochet a Leaf- learn how to crochet an autumn leaf with these beginner-friendly written instructions plus video tutorial.
This free crochet leaf pattern is a great stash buster. These leaves can be used as appliqués on accessories (scarves, purses) or on a wreath in fall colors.
Basic Stitches Used in This Crochet Pattern:
Single crochet- Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Then, yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook.
Half Double Crochet- Yarn over (YO) from back to front. Insert the hook into the next stitch. Put the tip of the hook under both of the loops at the top of the stitch. Yarn over, and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over the hook again, and pull the yarn through all three loops on the hook.
Double Crochet- Yarn over. Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over, and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.
Treble Crochet- Yarn over hook twice, then insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch – (there are four loops on the hook). Loop yarn over hook and draw through two loops, (there are now three loops remaining on the hook). Yarn over hook and draw through two loops. Again, loop yarn over hook and draw through the last two loops on the hook (there is now one loop remaining.) This completes one treble crochet.
Slip Stitch- Insert your hook into a stitch, hook the yarn and pull the yarn through.

Yarn: #4 worsted weight yarn (you can also make this leaf in other yarn weights using a corresponding sized hook)
Crochet hook: J-10
Size- leaf measures approximately 4 1/2 inches from side to side
Round 1. Chain 11, single crochet (SC) in the 3rd chain from hook, Half Double Crochet (HDC) in next chain, 2 Double Crochet (DC) in the next chain, Treble Crochet (TR) in the next chain, 2 TR in the next chain, TR in the next chain, DC in the next chain, HDC in the next chain, chain 5, slip stitch in 2nd chain from the hook and each of the next 3 chains, slip stitch in the beginning stitch.
HDC in the next stitch, DC in the next stitch, TR in the next stitch, 2 TR in the next stitch, TR in the next stitch, 2 DC in the next stitch, HDC in the next, SC in the next, slip stitch in the next stitch (which should be on top), chain 1. Break yarn and pull through loop. Weave in the ends.
