Kids Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

This earflap hat makes a great gift and it can be completed in an evening thanks to the super bulky yarn and large knitting needles. It’s an easy knit that’s suited for beginners.

Kids Ear Flap Hat Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Red Beacon (1 skein)

Needles: Size US 13 circular, 16-inch knitting needles, size US 13 double point knitting needles (dpns)

Size: Kids size 5-10 years old.

Gauge: 2 inches= 4 sts.

Also needed: stitch markers

Pattern instructions:

With the circular needles, cast on 40 sts. Join ends together and place a marker. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 round.

Knit every round until the piece measures 5 1/2 inches from the cast-on edge.

Shape crown:

(switch to double point needles when necessary)

Round 1: Knit across.

Round 2: (K3, k2tog) around (32 sts)

Round 3: Knit across.

Round 4: (K2, k2tog) around (24 sts)

Round 5: Knit across.

Round 6: (K1, k2tog) around (16 sts)

Round 7: Knit across.

Round 8: Knit 2 together across round (8 sts)

Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Pull to tighten and weave in ends.

For the first ear flap:

Pick up and knit 10 stitches (with the right side facing) at the side of the hat.

Work in Stockinette stitch for approximately 2 1/2 inches, ending with a wrong side row.

Row 1: K2tog, knit to last 2 stitches, K2tog (8 sts)

Row 2: Purl across.

Row 3: K2tog, knit to last 2 stitches, K2tog (6 sts)

Row 4: Purl across.

Row 5: K2tog, knit to last 2 stitches, K2tog (4 sts)

Row 6: Purl across.

Row 7: K2tog twice (2 sts)

Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches.

For the second ear flap:

Count 10 stitches over from the edge of the first earflap. Place marker. Count another 10 sts and place another marker. Make the second earflap in between these 2 markers.

Finishing:

For each earflap, cut 3 strands of yarn that measure 19 inches. Thread the yarn through the bottom of the ear flap using a yarn or tapestry needle. Braid the yarn and make a knot at the bottom. Trim the excess yarn. Make and attach pom pom.
